Okay all you 5th gen owners speak up. LOL as good as you folks say your 5th gen is, that said nothing is perfect. What in your Opinion is one or more short comings you have felt your VFR could be improved on? LOL less gear whine, thats a no brainier

Besides that gear whine, what about the lack of high-beam lighting?

(although the 5th gen does have an awesome "face" )

The "face" reminds me of the little alien that was reveiled when it's outer shell pealed back from Independence day. That's the only part of the bike I don't care for. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1829017600/tt0116629

As far as improving it, after spending $ on a decent rear shock, a Sargent seat and better fork springs it's a nice bike. Too bad bikes need money thrown at them to be complete.
Sometimes I think it needs more power, but I know if I could just sneak a ride on a ZX14 for 20 minutes I'd forget all about that.

Weighs too much. Removing the bodywork is an overcomplicated effort. Booted mirrors were ugly. Linked brakes should have been an option. Passenger seat cover should not require tools to install/remove. Brake and clutch control levers can't be angled down far enough (brake master cyl hits the clip-on riser). "Christmas Colors" tach (green/red)

    Ummmmm....other than that, I love my '99!!

I've never been one to chase after 'bigger, better, faster, more' All I've done is trim the fender and inch up the clip-ons. I like her looks and the way she lets me ride her any way I want.

BTW - Gear whine? I cant even hear it over my aftermarket air cleaner and slip-on exhaust.

Regulator/Rectifier issue is a definite drawback but fortunately the fix is relatively easy. I bought a VFRNess from www.wiremybike.com to resolve the issue with the R/R.

The stock seat could be better for long distance trips. After about 200 miles nonstop on the seat I start getting butt burn. I just wear special padded bicycle shorts to help with that.

More acceleration. Yes, it's fast but not quite warp-speed fast. That'll only be resolved if they come out with a VFR1000 though :-/ You know come to think of it, it's almost a plus not having warp-speed capability because it makes the bike very forgiving in case you twist the gas a little too much.

Overall, I like my '99 very much, it is becoming my all-time favorite bike as I rack up the miles.

    Here's the things I don't like:
    1) Honda HMAS suspension valving (big surprise, eh?)
    2) Don't like the linked brakes, they remove power from the front brakes and add weight that is unnecessary.
    3) I'd like the bike to be 35-50 lbs lighter. Getting rid of the CBS would help out here.
    4) The condom covers on the mirrors keep coming off. Same as on my F2.
    5) Don't like the non-adjustable rebound and compression on the forks, and lack of compression damping adjustability on the rear shock.
    6) Stock bars are low; the Genmar risers really help here.

That's pretty much it....I love the cam gear drive whine and the growling engine sound. As I am coming off 600s, the bike seems plenty torquey to me.

Wouldn't it be great to get some of us from here with as many different versions as possible together on the N.Ca. venture I can see the fun all ready.

I'd agree about the weight issue. Really, though I've noticed it less the longer I've had the bike. It seemed a bit overwhelming the first few weeks.

My biggest issue is, like some others here, concerning the RR. Mine crapped out about 4 months after I got the bike - it's a '98 - and had 24,000 miles on it when I bought it. The shop I happened to break down in front of took over 3 weeks and 2 separate visits to fix the problem (!) Since then it's run fine, but having read so many threads on this problem it's always in the back of my mind whenever I go to start the bike. Sorry for being long-winded...

Another minor gripe is the stock seat, especially on rides over, say, 90 minutes, but that will soon be fixed hopefully with a nice Sargent seat.

Other than that I really love the bike; ergos are good for me at 6' 1" and it's just generally fun to ride. I've never ridden any other gen VFR so have nothing to compare it to, but I'm happy.

I owned a Valkyrie for 5 years then bought this. Heavy is the last adjective I'd use to describe the VFR - seriously you lose weight and you get blown around by crosswinds and become less stable in long sweepers.
As far as the seat, an aftermarket seat should be a manditory purchase for this bike (and most Hondas) just add that to the cost of whatever bike your looking to buy.
