hey i was looking for a 4-2-1 exhaust system other than LASER, i saw that Kerker had a 4-1 but not sure if part number and cost, and i saw on the pics here that someone modified a bandit 1200 muffler and i guess made a new collecter...can someone possibly give other options besides laser. Really just want to get the 4-1 look as well as get bike to breathe a little better without a high price tag.

i hate to bring ya bad news dude, but ive already done the searching and calling around on that one, and laser is the ONLY company i found that still makes current production aftermarket exhausts for the 86-89 vfr's is laser.

i understand you seem to not want one, but after having 4 exhausts, laser is by FAR the best looking and best sounding exhaust ive had thus far. theyre pricey and a pain in the ass to get ahold of, but speaking from experience, i think theyre worth it.

the low end is @492 shipped, i think the carbon is about 550 + shipping. if i am not mistakened. but i think i am going to just go with the LASER. thanks guys, just thought i could save a few dollars with having the 4-2-1 pipe fabbed up, and having the end fitted for the Bandit 1200. but i saw the LASER on a bike and i like the look. CHRIS do you still have the LASER on your bike.

yea fatso1277, if ya look at any pic of my bike, youll find the laser pro d'or 4-2-1 high flow baffle and the cabon fiber can on it.

one issue that i have had though is that when i first installed it years ago, i made the mistake of tightening the loop around the can a little too tight, and that caused it to crack a little. over time, and with use, that crack has turned into a gaping hole and a total eye sore on my bike.

what distributor gave you those price quotes, fatso1277, i think i need to call them for a new can (and im still questioning whether im putting another CF can on that thing)

okay i think i might have found a solution...i just love it when a plan comes together...www.fosterrad.com, i think that is how you spell it. but i just went in the garage to grab a beer and realized that i kept my collector from the 700 teardown. so i can take that to the muffler shop have them fab me up a 4-1 collector and use the pipe spreader to get it to fit one of the D&D cans i found on ebay for the Bandit 1200. hopefully with all of that it wont run me to much over budget. and my baby can breathe some fresher air.

what do you guys think about that one.....damn it feels good to be a funtional alcholic. and even came up with a paint scheme in the process.

I got a Micron 4-2-1 system as birthday present in january. Its a race system that I guess ant made anymore, but a dealer had it in stock. Dont know how loud it is , will start bike this weekend if I get time.
Another option thats been for sale on german ebay, ebay.de, is Motad. its a stainless system 4-2-1 looks great, but I think the Laser is cheaper..

yeah the LASER is cheaper. you could also try omexperformace, i think they are in california. i think, just google LASER exhaust and it should come up.

I will price and see what it would cost to get the exhaust welded for the 4 into 1 and add to cost of pipe from EBAY and make a decision from there.

Chris does the laser offer and performance upgrade at all?

the laser absolutely does improve the overall performance of the bike, no doubt.

one thing that everybody with an 86-89 needs to be aware of though, is a particular condition caused by adding a 4-2-1 high flow baffle to the bike. just about everybody i have talked to and heard of that has added this type of exhaust finds a flat spot in their torque curve around 4-6k (i think, dont quote me on that) on the tach. lots of people have tried to get around this, but none have yet been successful. I have just come to accept it. cause in my eyes, its well worth the added performance and sound benefits to just deal with a little flat spot.

That would explain it, I currently have a Kerker 4-2-1 set up w/ all the packing removed(wasn't me). And yes I definetly have a bit of a flat spot in that RPM range, but it hits like crazy from 7 on up.

hah...ooooohhhhh yeah!, once you pass that flat spot, espically running it above 7k, these bikes run like nobodys business.

On stock V65 and V45's a lean spot right where the EPA tests emissions was built in 4-6K. To fix it, a #4 electronic washer was put under the needle.

You could try it. Practically free and easy to undo.

that really shouldnt be necessary, as when you add this exhaust to the bike, you pretty much have to jet the carbs. thankfully, the dynojet kits for this bike (at least the stage 2 kit that i have in mine) include 5-way adjustable carb needles. you only have to tear into the carbs and move an e-clip up or down the needle to set its height, and youre done (the problem with that is that it kinda involves taking the carbs off the bike, which SUCKS)

Chris a lot of the mods you have on your bike is what i am going for on my bike....overall how does it feel, power wise....not sure if you changed your suspension up any or not or even changed your chain up, but with exhaust and jetting, how does it feel. just curious, i dont wanna do any major surgery to engine, just a few mods here and there to get a little more power

below is the full list of mods i have on the bike so far:

    Cobalt racing tail
    Cobalt racing upper
    Cobalt racing CF windscreen
    Lockhart Philips lowers
    Bikemaster Supersport mirrors
Lockhart Philips flush mount turn signals
Laser Pro D'Or 4-2-1 deeptone exhaust
    K&N air filter
Dynojet Stage 2 jet kit w/ 128 main jets
Airbox lid drilled and snorkel removed
    Barnett clutch and springs

the only time ive ever cracked the valve covers on this motor was to check the valve lash at over 40,000 miles, and unbelievably, every single one of the 16 valves was still in spec. as far as rideability, id have to say that all of what ive done has made a significant improvement in the power to the back wheel. the midrange power is definitely more pronounced, and like i said, this bike will just scream at 7k+. The bike sounds like no other bike ive seen thus far. not only with the nice deep sound of the exhaust, but ive modified the airbox on the bike and while not really noticeable when just cruising, the instant i open the throttle and put the engine under load, i can hear a very deep, throaty roar coming from the intake and motor. (its kinda nice to hear something other than the typical whine that comes from a 600cc I-4).

the suspension is still bone stock, though id love to get an aftermarket shock on the back and a set of progressive rate fork springs and heavier fork oil on the front. Ive replaced the chain and sprockets once, and i had stock sprockets installed with what the shop said was an upgraded chain, though its surely the same style as stock, but better quality.

one thing though, im learning real fast that the carbs have to be tuned just right, and by somebody who really knows what theyre doing with a set of V4 carbs. if i have any gripes currently, its that although it makes great power compared to stock, sometimes it just feels out of tune.

What I found with my '86 was that I had installed a set of dual Yosh slipons onto the stock headpipes and I had the dreaded flat spot.

I attributed it to the elimination of the crossover tube that the factory mufflers had.

So, I had a shop fabricate me a crossover pipe that ran exactly in the location it did before. Made it out of 1.5" pipe, IIRC.

Afterwards, the flat spot went away entirely, and that was with zero other tuning changes.

I was a happy camper after that. :)
