Just the other day I was in stop and go traffic. Hit 237. It was about 85 degress. That's in Atlanta, Ga. Humitity is crazy here. Felt like 95. But it cooled down with the fan and when I got out of traffic.

    06 temperature with 9100 miles

This is my first bike, and have been keeping records and notes of everything.

1: Temp runs about 176 on the freeway, fans turn on at 209-212, and it has been up to 219 during stop and go traffic in 90 degree weather.

2: I ride 80 miles per day and I get 38 to 43 mpg. I mostly stay under 6300 rpms. Mostly.

3: I do notice that if I change from 87octane to 92 octane, I get 1.5 miles per gallon better.

just to add a +1, mine also climbs to 220 in a hearbeat in city traffic. on the freeway, it's anywhere from 170ish to 190ish depending on the outside temp and how hard i'm getting on it.

    Temperature

The Gen 6 specs say that the thermostat begins to open at 176-183 Degrees and is fully open at 203 Degrees and the relief pressue of the rad cap is 16-20 lbs. These are facts that Honda provides us. Argue if you want. The good news is that the boiling point of a 50/50 mix of water and eth/gly antifreeze at about 15 lbs of pressue is nearly 270 Degrees. Facts again. Same caveat. In our minds the boiling boint (water) is 212 Degrees. What a hangup, and I guess is a worry. Update that number to what is factual for the cooalnt and cooling system. Don't worry - it's all under control. Unless of couse your gauge is showing 270. But I'd like to think most of us would have pulled over by then. Move to Canada or Europe and the temperature gauge only shows low 100's. Cool! But the boiling point of water dropped to 100 Degrees. The important thing to remember is how hot is hot with the mix and pressure. Put the smile back on and keep on riding. Just be sure that you do those important pre-checks, like is there coolant and at the right level, is the rad cap functioning and tightened. Now back in the 60's with an air cooled British twin with no radiator or temperature gauge......there were a lot of bikes on the side of the highway.....

I tried some "water wetter" Or is it "wetter water" , i forget but anyway My temp has dropped about 4 degrees celsius, tried to get her up but 106 was tops, outside temp . was 72 . didn't know if it'd work but the race guys swear by it.

    Hey 300shooter...how's the armpit eh?
106 Degrees celsius equates to 223 Degrees fahrenheit.....
There are a lot of chemicals and additives available, tested and shown to "improve" performance of various systems. Cooling and lubrication etc. The Water wetters may work but then do we use STP, Rislone, Slick 50, etc to help solve a problem. They also have been shown to be effective and some swear by them. I personally wouldn't. I like to think that my systems are performorming as they should according to the manufacturer specs and recommendations.

Life in the "armpit" not so good right now, spell "layoffs" for me, lots of cuts down here in Windsor, gas prices are literally killing the auto industry.

If the bike gets too hot does it cut off the engine to prevent damage?

IIRC, yes the bike shuts down if the engine gets too hot. Not sure what temp triggers it tho.

Idling at a stoplight on a very hot day, my 6th gen. will get into the 220s but cools pretty quickly once the fans kick in and I'm moving again.

Mine runs hot in stop and go traffic and it doesn't cool down quickly. I listen to the fan run though and it keeps the temp below 220. I 've noticed that if I'm behind a vehicle in traffic, the windflow going through the radiator is disrupted and it will heat up. Once there's no traffic, it goes back down to around 175.

my 06 will get to about 225 when sitting in traffic on a hot day. When I get rolling, it drops to around 200, but out on the open road it's about 180 - 185. Unless it's a cold day, then it's around 170.
