I just aquired a a barely used take-off stock shock, and want to replace the shock that's currently mounted. I've got the wheel and exhaust removed (needed a new rear tire), and it looks pretty straight-up, but I'd appreciate any heads-ups on how to get through the swap with minimal frustrations...(ie:cursing the day I was born, ect, ect) :help:

If just unbolt, remove and replace that'd be groovy, but my experiences with what seems simple at first can lead to blood curdling screams

The shock was a freebie from my local dealer, and I figure with 26K on the current suspender, the change is worth the wrench party. She's on the center-stand awaiting your encouraging words and tips...

    TIA

I would just get a service manual. They're life savers.

Agreed, and with a bit more searching...

I found two articles right here on the Penske swap, and got all the info I needed. Just backed up what I kinda suspected.

Me go to dealer and order manual at next threat of quest for the Grail...

    "bring me a SHUBBERY!!!"

    rear shock removal

I swapped out my 26k rr shock for another.
    Pretty straight fwd.
Bike on ctr stand, unbolt rear of gas tank, put spacer to raise rear of tank up 3", nice shiny nut in front of tank brkt, is top brkt nut, unbolt that.
At bottom of shock, there is a triangle shaped brkt. remove 3 bolts holding it on. set both sides aside.
Shock will come most the way out the bottom.
You may have to sweeze your hands in under tank and unbolt top shock brkt bolt. Then the shock should slide right out the bottom of rear swingarm with a little wiggling.
When installing new shock be sure arrows on bottom brkts face the right direction.
    Enjoy
