Hey everyone, trying to help a friend. 05 VFR800. Turn key, dash is dim and fluctuates, fuel pump usually doesn't prime, lights don't come on, fast faint "clicking" noise under dash, dash lights dim & go out. Shut key off, clock comes back on @ 1:00. Once every several tries, pump will prime & everything on the dash works, then when you hit starter, entire system immediately shuts down. I'm a VTR1000 guy, so this bike is not so familiar. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks!

What is the battery voltage at rest and with the key turn to on with the headlights on?

What do the battery terminals look like--any corrosion? Inspect the wires and connectors around the Regulator/Rectifier for signs of heat damage.

Terminals are all clean & tight. Voltage is around 12.5, but headlights do not come on. It acts like a grounding problem in the ignition circut, just not sure if a component is know to fail on these bikes & cause this or if this is a fluke. There was a recall for the front wiring harness, but when I called Honda, it had already been replaced according to their records.
When you turn the key on, the dash flickers then fades. On the rare occasion the circuit does work, everything comes on immediately. I'm baffled...

Check the fuses. If you got service manual then follow up the harness for potential weak point.Good luck.

Sorry, should've mentioned I checked all the fuses and gone through with a multi meter on what wires I can figure out on my own. I don't have a manual so I don't have the schematics. I guess I'm looking to see if anyone knows of a known fail point for this type of problem. We'll probably end up pulling into the shop. She is really wanting to get it back on the road, and I'm real busy right now recording a cd with my band. I'm just looking to see if this is a known problem with a quick cure (relay), or if it's 1 of those drawn out chasing wire ordeals.

Did you check the voltage with the key in the on position or off? I'd bet that the voltage drops to diddley squatt when the key is on. Of course there are times when I have to admit that I'm wrong and eat crow.

Hook up a charger of boosters to it and see what happens.

I believe that it just replaced the headlight harness but I don't know that for sure. I had two bikes done but I wasn't there when they did the job.

There is an audible click Under the seat When, once I do get the system to power and I hit starter, it clicks & loses all power.

I had the same issue that you talked about on my 2002 vfr800 abs. I checked my fuses and everything looked good. I had a recall on the sub-harness and thought that was the problem. Turns out I was wrong and after an incident I had, I found the problem. There is a ground wire that connects from the tank to the frame. Make sure that both ends of the wire are completely secure. If not, then your bike will not turn on, or do what you mentioned. I hope that helps.

Pull the battery - charge it for 12 hours or more, then go to autozone or simular for a load test - Good, bad?

Get the battery rolling on a charger and while its going look at connectors.

Get back to us after your done. - Theres more to do. :potstir:
