basically i have an oil warning light on before i start the bike. Having recently changed oil i cannot remember if it used to stay on after turning the ignition but not starting the bike.

Oil pressure is only generated when the engine is running, and will dissipate slowly once the engine is shut down. Assuming the bike has been shut down for a while (overnight) the oil pressure warning light should be displayed when you first select the "ignition on" position (if it does not appear then it probably means the bulb has blown). The oil pressure warning light should go out pretty much straight away once you fire up the engine. If it stays on with the engine running check the oil pressure sender cabling has not come adrift.
