If you had a choice between a used 4th generation and used 5th generation and both were in pristine condition - which would you choose and why? Money wasn't the issue.

My best friend has a 1999 VFR and have ridden his a few times. His turns in slightly quicker and the engine gives a little more thrum/vibes when accelerating WFO in top gear. Both items I liked.

I like the 4th Generation better mainly because of the styling........

Given what you asked - 5th, I have a 4th and love it. I have not ridden a 5th but everything I have read (which is everything that I know has been written) says the 5th is a better bike. If Honda cannot improve their products, all things being equal ,we are in trouble. JIM

BTW askimg 5th vs. 6th would have a lot more fur flying but since you did not ask I will keep quiet.

Unquestionably, the 5th gen., imho. I like the f.i., though when carbs (and rest of engine) are dialed in properly, the 4th gen does run quite well.

I've had both ('96, '00) and put lots of miles on each, over 150,000 miles combined.

Styling is a matter of individual preference, so get whatever cranks you.

Okay here I go Doh! 4th, but that said I wouldn't mind having a yellow 5th in the garage for those off days when I just need a puttts around machine.
The two things that throw me off regarding the 5th are linked brakes and the styling cues, Not a fan of the instrument panel either, now had Honda gone 5th gen engine (take note, I agree it's a slightly better engine even if the gear drive is on the outboard side and like the idea of FI) and styled it leaning more towards the CBRs then there'd be no guessing what be in my garage. oh! and they needed to have had the suspension up grade that came on at the least the F4I.

I had a 4th for 7 years and loved it. I loved its looks, the analog gauges - classy, the butter smooth throttle response and the personal feel of the bike. I think it was a bike Ducati could have built. Lots of good times on that bike.

But I started to ache for more performance.... then made the mistake of going on vacation and we rented 5th gens and 6th gens, and I got to ride them, - 5th one day, 6th the next. I was just drawn to the 5th - the engine rocks! I didnt care for the brakes and the suspension was a bit soft, but I felt I could grab one and turn it into a super long haul sport bike. Well I bought one and did it. No Regrets, just big grins.
Check gallery pics if you want.

So 4th or 5th? - well if I had garage space - both.
    Good luck

    See RFVR - I'm ahead a ya..... :)

5th. It is in pretty much every measurable catagory, a better bike. The fuel injection alone would answer the question for me.

    KC-10 FE out...

You can count on a newbie to the forum like me to stir the pot. I was just curious, I have only had a 94' VFR and was just curious about the 5th generation. I do like that the styling of the 5th still resembles what "my idea" is of a VFR especially as opposed to the 6th generation. As I re-enter the VFR arena I can't help but notice the 5th generations on sale in the classifieds of this forum.

There usually no friction between the 4th vs 5th gen guys, if you want some good old fashion flaming start a good 5th vs 6th thread, I'll admit the styling on the 4th is classic and the throttle response is buttery smooth but if you ever get a chance to ride a well dialed in 5th gen, you'll fell the difference and know why the 5th gen has won so many bike of the year awards :yo:

I'm pretty much in agreement with what these guys have said. The 4th and 5th are both excellent. I prefer my brakes de-linked, but I didn't have that option so I deal with it. I like the FI on the 5th and the engine just seems to put out a little more oomph. It's really pretty close, though. The styling on the 5th in more appealing to me although still not perfect(the ass looks fat), but the 6th styling is a little too origami for me. The klingon I like because it screams FU when it's coming at you. Mean mofo in my opinion.
