I just bought a new 2008 VFR. I am new to this type of bike. How essential is this 600 mile check up? The dealer seemed to really stress it. What kind of adjustments are made at this inspection. I have had a few other bikes: HD, V-strom etc. never had to do a 600 mile check. Bike is running great no issues.

It's a brand new engine, metal shavings will wear off and clog up the filter relatively quickly as the engine breaks in. A clogged filter wll enter bypass mode and cycle these shavings in your engine. You don't want this. This is the main thing I know of. Check your manual it shoudl say waht's done at each maintenance interval.

You could change the oil yourself if you're handy with that type of thing for MUCH cheaper than the dealer will do it for.

I'm sure there'll be seveal more replies to this with much more info.. .stay tuned.
