I have a 2004 VFR800 and I just began having a starting issue. When I attempted to start the engine in 1st gear with the kickstand up and clutch pulled in, the lights dimmed and.....nothing. It starts fine in N, and the kickstand switch seems to work fine to kill the motor in gear but not in N.

I seem to remember that I used to be able to start it in gear with the kickstand up and clutch lever in. Did something to wrong?

There is a microswitch on the clutch lever mount, and two wires in a connector going from there into the loom. Check that the wires have not come loose. If they haven't , do the following:

    Bike on CENTRESTAND!
    Sidestand down
    Unplug wires from clutch microswitch
Make small piece of wire to bridge connections on disconnected plug.
Double check bike is on CENTRESTAND!
    Place in first gear
    Try to start bike

If it doesn't start, pull the wire out of the connector, and try again.
If it STILL doesn't start, then you have got a problem in the wiring somewhere.
If it DOES start, then the problem is in the clutch lever microswitch, which is easy to replace.

*** I am not accountable for you making your bike fall over if the back wheel is touching the ground when you start it in gear...!***
