So! I have a garage kept 'cherry' 86 VF500F with under 9k miles. Aftermarket Supertrap exhaust, sounds sweet!!!

However, the bike will not start, (unless I shoot starter fluid in the carbs), the brakes are dodgy and the front fork seals are bad. I think the carbs need some love. Ok, they probably need a LOT of love.

For the life of me, nobody in my area (Central VA) will work on this bike for me. Thoughts? Can I send the carbs off to be rebuilt? Is it easy to just take them off and put them on? What is a reasonable price for the job?

    Im not the greatest mechanic.

Anybody in the Charlottesville, VA area that can refer me to someone?

Also I need a bunch of hardware to secure the plastic back on.

    Thanks all!

The carbs are easy enough to work on once you get them off. The pilots are probably gummed up. They are still available thru 1986 VF500F A Honda Motorcycle Parts
Lot's of carb help on this site. As for the forks and brakes those are fairly easy as well.
Some advice: If you are going to ride an old bike you had better learn how to work on it. These things will bleed you dry if you have to pay someone to do simple maintainence.
    Good luck.

    :welcome:

I have LOADS and LOADS, years and years of professional carb repair experience, and i'd be pleased to help you if you remove the carbs, box them up, and send them to me for expert inspection, cleaning, precision assembly, and scientific adjustment.

Carbs are fragile, easily damaged, and first-timers never do a proper job.

Proven fact: Squirrelman loves VF/VFR carbs !!

    PM me for additional details.

My 88 and 89 Hawk GT's are solid performers. I've been riding them for almost 10 years now, never had a real problem.

It's this 86 that I have had sitting around for about 5 years now, I want it back in shape for a quick sale. I picked it up for $500. Looks like new, just needs some attention. That link is a good one, thanks for that!

I am close by, and have had that same motorcycle for 26 years. Maybe I can help a little. Although I must confess my dam 86 won't even start anymore.

    PM sent.

You'll need to replace the fork seals before getting the brakes any better cuz most likely fork oil is all over the rotor and pads.
