im getting spark but not gas but it will start if i spray gas in the carbs so that tells me that im not getting gas from the tank the pitcock valve is alright i can blow through it but it still wont start i read that there is a vacuum line that goes on the pitcock valve and goes some where but idk and will that make it not start.
Some petcocks do have a vacuum valve that opens with engine vacuum to allow fuel flow and cut it off when none is present (at least designed so). Do you get any fuel out of the carb bowls when you open the drain screws? Have you checked the fuel line from the petcock to the carbs that it is free and clear of obstruction. The needle valves in the carb bowls may be gummed up blocking fuel entry. May be time for a good carb cleaning--do a search on cleaning carbs to find a good tutorial on this site.
ok ill try that but i found were that vacuum line went and now im getting a little more response but still wont run and now the pitcock valve is letting just very little gas through it.
What's the history of this bike--has it been running recently and just suddenly quit, or has it been sitting for a couple of weeks, months, years, etc?
Okay that's good to know that it will run with starting fluid, but you really have no history of the bike. So the prudent thing to do before you risk your life riding an unknown old motorsickle is check and verify all the critical elements of the entire bike, i.e. brakes, coolant, fuel system, lubrication, chain/sprockets, tires, suspension, etc. Get a copy or download the factory service manual and read it if you want to learn how to maintain the machine properly. There is no quick and easy remedy with old bikes, you will need to be prepared to do some work, or else get a new bike that is ready to go. Your carburetors are likely clogged with old fuel turned to varnish and will require removal for cleaning. Don't remove the bolts holding the bottom plenum plate to the carb intakes--that is not the correct procedure and will result in more trouble than you can imagine. Did you find the thread on cleaning carbs--it has great photos to show you how and what to do? Your entire fuel system needs to be checked and verified to be clean--from the tank to the bowls, etc. The ignition (electrical) is likely okay since it starts, but the charging system should also be inspected for signs of arcing and thermal damage. You might want to read thru the 1st gen forum for other folks working on the same bike. Good luck and have fun with your new project!
i took the carbs off and took the plate off that the air boxs sites on to do it i got a motor sport store looking at them and they r going to clean them and rebuild them for me.
Count yourself lucky if they do a good job with your carbs !! YOU need to remove the petcock, drain and flush the fuel tank and check for signs of rust. Without cleaning the tank of debris, you'll have more carb problems.
