86 vfr 700 and 86 vfr 750 fuel tank lid

    I need a new fuel tank lid for my 86 vfr 700. The only one I can find on line is for an 86 vfr 750. Will that fit?

    Yes, but you have to confirm California model or not. 49 state bikes vented thru the cap, Cali bikes had a vent on the bottom of the tank that went to the charcoal canister. A Cali lid on a 49 state bike will fuel starve the pump.

    Have purchased "similar" and discovered it was too "thick/tall" and wouldn't mount low enough into tank to allow lid to close properly.

    I ordered one without a key from China. I'll let you know how it works out.

    What's your plan to get a key made?
    Locksmiths who could / would be willing to make a key, are few and far between in my town.

    Still want to know your results in finding a workable lid.

    Check the rubber seal thoroughly, the rubber is weak at this age and not replaceable like some caps.

    I know a few instances in my area of rival biker groups pouring sugar in the tanks of those without locking gas caps :( :( so that option is a NON STARTER for me.
    I'll keep looking and post if I find one.

    Can we get an update to this thread? The fuel cap ebay links are dead. Can anyone verify whether they worked on the 86/87 VFR700?.............and provide a new link of same filler cap on ebay?? Would appreciate any help. Thx

    Or course. But they all are constrained by the "GOOD - FAST - CHEAP" doctrine. Pick any two. Sometimes only one.

    Either the tank needs to vent or the cap needs to vent (or both!).

    1st option: FAST - CHEAP

    Drill and tap a hole thru the gas cap where the 49 state vent mechanism normally resides.

    and install a nipple for a motocross style fuel cap vent.

    Never actually done this! Just thought of it while responding. Looks like the right hole could miss the lock barrel and latching mechanism. On a race bike, why not. Makes a tank bag impossible. Might have experiment on this one with some CA CBR caps I have (pictured).

    Oh on that note... the 86 - 89 VFR has a slightly different bolt pattern than every other fucking Honda from the 90s. I think RogueRC24 installed a Tyga keyless race cap for the later Hondas but had to hog out the holes. Don't know the final result on it. I think it "worked" but wasn't ideal. So that one is only a FAST, they are not CHEAP and I'm not sure it was a GOOD.

    And on that same note, there is another cap option that I developed. This is a GOOD. It is not FAST or CHEAP.

    There is a Kawasaki cap that shares the same bolt pattern.

    But, the outer diameter needs to be machined down to fit in the filler well of the tank to fit properly.

    So now you have the cost of the cap and cost / time of machining. And you need to make a new Viton seal that compensates for the two different cap openings.

    And back to the Motocross Cap Vent option, you can always braze in a tank vent towards the front of the tank. Not sure how this qualifies in the doctrine. If you're modding a decent tank then probably not GOOD. This is not mine, but a fellow VF/VFR/Hawk rebuilder. He finally found a Hawk tank but it had a race vent. And did a SHITTE-TONNE of body work to get where you see it. (Fuck yeah Jim)

    And then there is the GOOD. Keep looking for a decent 49 state cap. Not FAST or CHEAP likely.

    If you have a CA tank, then it is vented just fine. I'll show what I did with my CA tank that I removed the canister.

    Here's what I installed on the RC26 that had a CA tank.

    It's an old school battery vent catch tank that was required by TECH if you ran that type of battery. You can see that I filled the tank very full on the last ride and got some splash down. I also think I need to re-route my vent tube (top position) to a better spot. Perhaps I'm getting a little "vacuum" effect and it's pulling some splash too.

    Anyway, that little catch tank works great. You could also just run the tube out the bottom along with the coolant over flow, but I didn't want to maybe atomize some fuel that could come out onto the rear of my bike. I typically don't spit coolant (at speed).
