I just got an 86 VFR700 and have a dumb question. I have oil in the alternator compartment (left side cover). Is this supposed to be this way, or do I have a problem?

    Keeps it cool

Yeah, the way most motorcycles charge a battery is to mount a magnetic flywheel on the crankshaft. This spins inside a coil of wires called a stator coil. This whole mess needs to be flooded with oil to keep the charging system cool and keep it from shorting out.

This is kinda nice when you need to replace the alternator because usually you only have to change out the coil.
