I just bought an 86 VFR700 that needed a speedometer fixed, and a gas leak fixed. I was able to fix both through a speedo cable and a new carb gasket. It has 26k miles on it, but starts and runs very well. It has new tires, new brakes and a new set of front forks.

I am new to motorcycles, and outside of an oil change, new spark plugs and a new air air filter what other maintance should be done. I am restoring the bike, but want to get it mechanically running well and then painting it.

    Thanks in advanced.

Make sure the chain is in good condition, lubed well, and adjusted properly (and not past the recommended stretch limit mark)...probably would not be a bad idea to replace the chain and sprockets if they are all original, and/or have lots of miles on them. Go over the bike and make sure the bolts are all tight, and not missing. If you have not already, I would buy a maintenance manual for servicing...it is like a bible to have handy.

Might not be a bad idea to drain and flush the coolant, and put some fresh blood in her at the proper mixture ratio...use motorcycle specific, and/or non-silicated coolant with distilled water when you refill it. Check the color of the brake fluid, and if it is discolored, it might be wise to flush your brake system as well.

Check to make sure that the clutch does not slip when riding it (you will notice this pretty fast), and if so you can usually get away with replacing just the friction plates providing nothing else is worn badly or damaged.

Other than that...get on da bitch and do this.....

BTW....welcome to the forum as well!
