Hey all.. new to joining the site (today). I have a 90 VFR750F and having to replace the rear valve cover gasket (some call it the head cover gasket). Looking for suggestions on keeping the gasket attached to the cover as I align it. One mechanic suggested using Permatex High Tack Gasket Sealant. Another mechanic suggested using pure Vaseline. Any prior experience with this suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

In my own experience a weeping cam cover gasket has less to do with the gasket and a lot to do with the rubber washers in the hold-down bolts. They pack down with age, and then won't apply enough clamping force to the gasket. Replace those washers before you replace the gasket. Use a 1/4" torque wrench on the bolts as they are will in any case be bottomed out, and more torque can snap the threaded part of the head casting...
Any suitable cement will hold that gasket in place, I've used superglue in the past.

You can dab a little RTV, (I enjoy Yamaha bond 3 aka Three-Bond 1211) on your half moons, thats aboot it. If you need the entire gasket then you need one I guess. Baby powder is a good way to find little leaks fyi.

Just following up with this post and wanted to thank everyone that has responded. I have been forced to wait on this repair of replacing the gasket until after the holidays due to time restraints on starting this project. I love getting responses from people with experience and finding out what works best for others. I will update this article soon with news of the repair job and how it went (well I hope).

    Thanks all!

My baby uses the potty, wipes, flushes, washes her hands, puts drinks down on coaster, and knows how to use a 1/4 ratchet wrench. TMI? nah...

Follow up on this repair job. A thin line of Permatex gasket adhesive did the trick. No oil leak now!!
