I see here lots of questions on speedo error......how about a speedo that doesn't work? I noticed my speedo failing....then a couple days later it stopped working all together. My repair handbood doesn't even touch the subject of speedo's. I called my local Honda dealer and it sounds like it's an electronic device. I really don't want to take it to the dealer and spend a billion dollars. Has anyone dealt with this? replaced it? any photo's???? any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Its still snowing here but i'm dyin' to get riding soon. Thanks!!

First place I'd look for trouble is right there at the sensor at the counter shaft, left foot area, when you look there, you'll see a funny kinda IMO bulky wire plug like thing. thats the hook up to the sensor inside. I've never seen a failed speed-O, so this would be my first guess.

If memory serves the 96 vfr speedo drive is an electromechanical device ie: the drive is driven off the front sprocket by a plastic gear which generates a pulse to trigger the speedo, these gears wear out giving erratic readings and then failing completely, replace the gear which is part number 44808 MR7 013 and all should be well. The gear resides behind the front sprocket cover.
