Hi everyone, I'm after some advice in my VFR. I had a relatively low speed crash and the fairing stay was slightly. I'm after a replacement but was wondering how much the A6 models differs. Could I fit one to my A3 with some adjustment? I'm also having an electrical problem. The speedo randomly cuts out, sometimes with a small backfire or stutter from the engine then the FI light comes on. It comes back on intermittently then stays on and no problem. No running differences noticed when speedo out. Connections on left side seem OK and so does sensor. Only seems to happen when it warmed up. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Not sure how the A3 vs A6 translates to us over here in the states but your speedo problem could be a couple of things however based on your description of the other woes you're having I'd do an inspection of all your wiring and connectors and check for melted connectors and over heated wiring. This could be the crux of the issue(s) you're having. Then do a R/R and Stator check along with a battery load test. Electrical gremlins have been known to play havoc on our bikes. This thread might be of some use to you... http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/39277-How-to-fix-common-regulator-Stator-failures?
Iv'e replaced the Reg Rec due to poor charging already. I was trying to find out if I can easily modify the 2006 models fairing stay/bracket to fit my 2003. If it's as simple as an extra bracket that needs to be taken off that would mount the ABS module or something similar.
Poor charging and replacing the R/R is probably due to other wiring issue(s), which IMO means checking the electric system, particularly the ground (earth) connections. When the R/R was replaced was there a full electrical system check done as well? Did the Stator get replaced too? As far as the subframe, the 6 Gen 2002-2013 (2009 here in the states) is pretty much the same bike however when looking up the part in the parts fiche, the upper cowl part is the same for 2002-2005, but a different part for 2006-2009. This applies to both ABS and non ABS models, not the same part for different models (ABS & Non ABS) but for the same model type in those year designations. Not sure what is different exactly but it could be a mounting tab for relays and other wiring harness related stuff. The wholes where the fairings mount to will most likely be the same though. http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/2006/VFR800+AC/COWL+STAY/parts.html
The reason the upper cowl part number is different is because of the bit below the windscreen, between the headlights. On the 02 to 05's it's black and on the 06+ it's body color. I'm pretty sure all the mounting points and stays are the same for all 6th gens.
It's the cowl stay that was being questioned, not the actual cowl, so color is irrelevant as that would be the plastic bits. However, as I mentioned, the mounting locations for the fairings should be the same, what mounts inside that area is still in question and is what the OP was wondering about.
Cheers for the replies, it was only the RR replaced. When I replace the stay I'll dismantle the electrics and clean connections etc. and inspect the loom of course. So it looks like the fairing mounting points will be the same. It's just down to the internals. I have found a cheap 2006 fairing stay and can't get hold of a 2003 one.
I had the left side fairing off and cleaned up the connectors and it seems to have stopped the speedo cutting out. Found pics from both models to compare and it looks like the only difference in the stays is the bracket for the PGM-FI unit so it may be useable. I've got a new problem now. On neutral throttle the bike isn't smooth. Sounds fine but it feels like the chain is loose. Almost surging and dropping a bit. Not noticeable on acceleration or deceleration.
The 6 Gen is known to have a surging issue at low RPMs and there are several post on this. Some claim that removing/disabling the PAIR valve system and/or disabling the air box flapper and/or removing the air box snorkel cures it. Personally I have not seen any 100% proof of any one or all of these being the "exact" cure, others may claim otherwise. I at one time had done the flapper and snorkel mods but subsequently have put both back in operation. Personally I think a throttle body sync would be the first step. Although checking the chain slack never hurts. If none of that doesn't work, a Power Commander is another option and is what I have on my '09 but they are a bit of money.
