Hi all, I had a question regarding the pre-load adjustment on the front forks on my 98. The manual says the default setting is 9mm from the top of the adjust to the top of the cap, or something along those lines. I have two different repair manuals, but I cannot figure out which two surfaces I am supposed to measure between. Anyone have a picture that clearly indicates where to measure?

    Thanks!

From the top of the pre-load adj. ( the flat blade screwdriver adj. ) to the top of the bolt.

The best thing to do is measure and set the sag based on your riding weight and riding style. You'll need to take the measurements of the the front and rear with the bike "unladen" and then get in all of your gear and get on the bike and measure them again. Depending on the type of riding you will be doing the sag measurements will differ. According to the 'Race Tech Motorcycle Suspension Bible', for most street riding setups the guideline sag would be 30-35MM (Fr.Rr.). You will need someone to help you take measurements as it's impossible to measure once your on the bike. There is actually a more detailed process, but this is the quick sag setup process and should put you in the ballpark. The more detailed way gets the free sag settings and makes sure those are set appropriately too.

    Cheers!

Wrap a zip tie around your fork leg and slide it down to the top of the slider. When you get on the bike, it will push the wire tie up. Get off the bike and measure the space between the slider and bottom of the wire tie. That is your fron end sag.

Definitely get the second set of hands to help with rear sag. I would strap a piece of PVC across the seat (centered on the rear axle) and measure from the pipe to the center of the axle. Then take the bike off the center stand and have your helper measure again.

Thanks for the info guys! I will just set it to stock for now, and spend a little time dialing it in this weekend.
