I have an '00 VFR that is completly stock, I picked it up used in January '09 and have since put on 13K, it has certainly been a blast.

I've been researching and asking various folks on what if any recommendations they would have to enhance the bikes fun factor, the recurring suggestion is an aftermarket exhaust system (lighter than the stock version). I've been looking on-line but there does not seen to be too many aftermarket options for the VFR (maybe I'm not looking in the right place).

Other than weight reduction, does an aftermarket exhaust system provide any additional performance value and if it does what manufacturer is recommended?

Here are a couple of the most popular makes. Not a ton of performence enhancement to be had but maybe 5 or 6 HP and some torque, especially if you get a PCIII and a dyno tune to go with the slip-on. The real satisfaction comes in the changed tone of the motorcycle. Deeper and louder makes it sound deadly. Combined with the sound of the gear driven cams it becomes one of the most unique sounding motorcycles ever produced.

Gut the stock can, and keep money in your pocket for good suspension upgrades. True performance gains from aftermarket pipes only work with Power Commander dyno tuning. How much are you willing to pay per each HP gain?

thank you both for your feedback, it does sound like it's a little more complex than a simple remove and replace, I will take both of your responses into consideration, from a suspension perspective what upgrades should I consider?

I've had 5 mufflers on my 2000. The only real benefit you're going to see is reduced weight. I'm sure you pick up a hand full of ponies, but let be serious here, it's a 515lb bike with a full size rider on it. You're not going to notice the added HP. Get it for the sound. A gear driven cam V4 singing thru a quality pipe will make the hair on your neck stand up.

    Anyway, those 5 mufflers were:

    Stock

    Two Bros round titanium

    Scorpion oval CF

    M4 oval CF

    Staintune

Hands down, the best of the bunch is the Staintune. I tell you now, you will not hear a better system on a 5th Gen. I guarantee it.

    KC-10 FE out...

When the time comes to do fork maint, consider installation of springs matched for your body weight, same for rear shock (if it isn't blown yet). How many miles on your bike, total?
I've been researching quite a bit lately and began reading a motorcycle suspension book (K. Code). With a properly adjusted bike, you can keep up with some of those rockets out there.

The pipe itself is a very easy "remove and replace." A power commander is also an easy install, roughly 15 minutes. A Dyno tune can be done in a couple of hours if you have a dyno close to you, usually around $300. Like Kobe said, it can start to get a little pricey. For a 5 gen you'ld be looking at right around $1000 for everything, depending on the pipe you choose. In my opinion you could bypass the PCIII and the dyno and just get a good chimney solely for the sound. The sound of a properly uncorked V4 is worth the effort, even more so with your gear driven cams. I hate to overstate this, but it is truly one of the VFR's best features and I for one think that you'ld be missing out should you decide to not open that sound up in one fashion or another. If we were talking about just another inline, I wouldn't even mention it, but a V4 is a differant ball of wax.

Here is a link to a full suspension upgrade that one of our members did. The Elkas he chose are not bank breakers but do represent a nice upgrade over OEM. This is a labor intensive mod and worth it if you ride very aggressively, whether it be on the track or the road. There are several other suspension threads regarding other brands, like Ohlins, in the advanced search or mechanics garage threads.

I should add that when I say louder, it's not Harley obnoxiuos or anything like that. If that was of any concern?

If I owned a non-piped 5th gen, I would take the above linked pipe right now. Since it's made the ebay section of our main page my bet is that it's gone in less than a few hours, if that. Great price for a great pipe. Maybe ask a 5ht gen owner if the staintune can be repacked or if they have a defined lifespan. Actually any staintune owner should be able to answer that.

The PC and dynotune are nice options but you will probably notice a difference with just a new can. And the PC2 is available for your bike at a lower cost than the PC3. There are canned maps available for the PC, I've had my bike dyno'd using one of those available maps and the fuel/air is spot on. I've gone through many exhausts also; stock, Micron low mount, Micron high mount (2), Erion, Wolf underseat(2) and now TBros full system. Sound wise the Tbros full system was the best but the Micron low mount, with 2.5" mid-pipe, had the best seat of the pants kick over any of the others. I think any of them will give you better acel and sound.

This has been my opinion as well. I bought my 2000 with a high mount Staintune and would only switch to a mid/low mount Staintune. It's the best sounding bike I've ever heard. Sounds like a small block V8. I've had three or four people tell me it's the best sounding exhaust they've ever heard too. I love it!

I have a 6th gen and I see two brothers, scorpion and leo vince. But have had no luck finding wolf or devil exhaust for sale. I heard on you tube a Ixil system that sounded awesome!!!! But I Have no Idea where to get one of those from.

Like others have said - Staintune is the one to get. I believe the guts are solid and has no packing to replace.

Had one on my 4th gen - loved it!

Allthough I've never been, I imagine your butt hurting wouldn't add to the fun factor much.
