Another RC24 arrived today.......from Boston

This is my 2nd acquired RC24. Not running - just like the first one. Only this one is in MUCH better condition overall. The only thing is.....the seller sold it because he found a mouse nest in the air box and suspects the engine is locked up. All of this was mentioned in his classified so no foul there.

It arrived today and the first thing I did was remove the fuel tank to get a look underneath. The seller had already removed the carbs and air box - those came in two boxes.

With the naked eye I didn't see anything super corroded - valves looks good from what I could see.

The seller said he had removed the rear spark plugs and added some MMO in there. Then tried to move the engine by gently pushing on the bike while in gear. Couldn't get the engine to turn over and that's when he decided to sell it.

What I intend to do is remove all 4 plugs, add some MMO and let it sit for a few days.

Then remove the left engine cover and see if I can move the crank with a ratchet wrench.

That's what I have in mind at the moment.

Gorgeous bike though......under 7K miles too, if that odometer is correct.

Seller said he bought the bike from a charity organization so no info on it's history.

 

I bet the engine the moves.

Be sure to inspect the front brakes closely at some point. Those 1000F rotors are usually too thick for the caliper brackets.

At the very least you know somebody has mixed n matched some stuff up front.

The carbs are in bad shape. Might be salvageable but will take time.

I have a set of RC26 carbs all ready to go I could use, when the time comes (engine checks out OK). Thoughts?

When you do go to turn the engine over, remove the plugs again to ensure you are not forcing against hydrolock.

I'm sure you were planning to, but a friendly reminder.

previous purchase...engine doesn't turn, yeah, bike was in first gear.

 

Are you talking about when I try to start the engine with the starter...after confirming it turns by hand? Thanks!

 

^^^ I would say yes.

 

At first by hand. If it turns, then crank with power with the plugs srill out (covering the plugs hole with rags) so you are for sure clearing the cylinders.

Then install some old plugs and see if it fires when you are ready. You're gonna be burning some shit, so don't ruin a new set.

Dude... just replace that lower air case with the backfire screen. That is BELOW your air filter, right on top of your carbs, which are right above your intake valves and pistons.

 

No you're right - so for now I will just use one of the ones I already have off of one of my other bikes.

Today I was finally able to move forward on the bike. Last time I worked on it, while trying to get some MMO down into each cylinder, I accidentally tore the top off the spark plug boot on #1, so attending to that was priority #1.

My bad - I was in a hurry last time and working in a cramped area behind the radiator. Today, I brought a pan to catch the coolant so could remove the rad. hose and bolt and pull the radiator completely out of the way. Learned something new too. There's only one bolt holding the top on. The right side is just a pivot. Boy was I happy to see that!

Even so the top of the boot pulled off so I had to use some needle nosed pliers and WD40 to get that boot off so I could remove the spark plug. Once that was done I poured some MMO down into those front (#1 and #2) cylinders. I had already done it to the back ones and gave those an extra does again today. Next step will be to try and turn the engine over by hand.

To get the MMO down into the cylinder I used a large syringe and short piece of plastic tubing. Also a flashlight so i could guide the tubing down through the spark plug hole.

I also removed the headlight fairing, mirrors, and windscreen for better access to the front plugs.

I have a new used spark plug wire coming.

The syringe and tubing. Didn't need a plunger...the MMO just went in with gravity.....

Radiator and oil cooler look decent, don't let that Rad drop. It is actually straight unlike most of mine. lol
Pull that protective screen off and hit it with some paint. Easy way to make it all look nice on build up.
