My bike is idling rough and hesitates at takeoff... did some research, seems all signs point to bike needin' a valve job. To be fair, I put 10k miles on her since I got her, and (stupid me) never bothered to ask when last valve check was...

So, I'm wonderin' if anyone has the stats I'll need, or instructions, or any relevant info =P I'm gonna try and get the shop manual from Cycle Gear when I get paid again...

Any help y'all can give me is appreciated

I have a tool I modified for said task, it makes it much easier and makes the front intake valves possible but still a bitch.I will send it to you but you have to promise to send it back.

Have you done a compression and or leak test? Just curious as to why you think your problem is valves.

I would think given th age of the bike and not knowing any history aboot previous care that a full tune up is in order just for peace of mind.

Agreed. That sounds like quite a stretch for something that is more likely in the carbs.

What is total mileage on the bike ??

Compression test first, then a good carb synch might be all you need.

when you say valve job, you mean a valve check/adjustment, right ??

Be prepared to drain the cooling system and remove radiator to get access to front cylinder valves.

clean the valve covers thoroughly so that no debris falls into the engine when covers are lifted off

remove small access cover on right side to turn crank manually

work slowly and carefully and study the manual....double check clearances before running motor

thank you sooo much Squirrelman *thumbs up* the pics are a great aid... and it never occured to me, my buddy did mention syncin the carbs might solve the issue BEFORE i go tearin into the head...

And yes, by "valve job" i simply meant check/adjust as needed...

and to answer that first question, mileage = 53k. I got bike at 42k.
