I'm playing phone tag right now with a dealer salesman that has a new 2016 DLX. I want the bike with the OEM hardshell panniers.

Are dealers discounting these bikes? I've not heard back from the guy yet on his price, so thought I would ask here.

I guess that depends on the dealer. I don't think you'll find to many deals on a 2016. Seams to be plenty of leftovers out there deeply discounted.

Dealers around the country are heavily discounting the standard, but not the DLX. I believe the DLX is selling, somewhat decent.

If you follow that link I posted there are several leftover DLX's under 10K. Cheapest is $7963 for a 2014, cheapest 2015 $11,500.

Honda has no listing on their website for a 2016 . Which is a pretty good indication that production has been idled till remaining stock is sold off. Or worst case scenario Honda will discontinue the model.

Correction. It is a 2015 DLX, and having just spoken with the salesperson, they are listing it at full MSRP plus freight plus setup, total $13,149 plus tax.

They had it discounted $500 in May but he says the discount no longer applies, HOWEVER, it is strongly suggested I come there in person with my proposed trade in bike.

Don't know how the 2014 DLX differs from the 2015 DLX, but a dealer just north of Milwaukee (I'm a little north of Denver) is doing truckload sales of the 2014 DLX at a price, including del'y and setup, of about $8,750. Just spoke with a guy there that says they sold the last of the DLXs the had of this "truckload" deal and still have some STDs, but will get more DLXs in a week or two, and yeah, will honor that same $8,750 price.

So, it boils down to this. Are the bikes the same or does the 2015 have much more in features? If there are features, are the worth the huge cost bump?

Kelley Blue Book Motorcycles apparently thinks of them both as used bikes, showing the DLX retail numbers as $10,075 (2015) and $9,520 (2014) which means the one-year newer bike is worth only $555 more.

If this Wisconsin dealer is right in saying he can get more 2014 DLXs there must be a decent quantity of them still in inventory somewhere.

There doesn't appear to be any difference between models years.

Going through all the listings I see a 2015 DLX in Phoenix for something like $9800. Heck, I can fly to Phoenix for $55 and have a nice ride back by way of Monument Valley, Moab, and all the scenery offered across Colorado on I-70.

There is zero difference between a 14 and 15. There's absolutely no reason to pay anywhere near msrp for a 15, when you can get the 14 for well under $10k. FYI I have used www.haulbikes.com twice when buying a bike from out of state. Both times, the cost was around $600. The hardest part is doing the purchase transaction through phone/emails. But if you can save several thousand dollars, it's worth it.

Also, the factory saddlebags are an accessory add on. They don't technically come already installed on any new bike. You can buy them after the fact from any dealer. I think the regular cost is around $900. With all the low prices we keep seeing out there, you should be able to buy a new 2014 DLX, a set of bags, and get it home for less than $10k.

I believe the ST comes with bags. The ST1100s and ST1300s were never shown in marketing and specification photos without bags.

But the ST when sold goes to a different demographic, the one that intends, or at least pretends to, travel.

Maybe most viffers consider "touring" a canyon run for lunch.

Just now back from an 82 mile loop up I-25 and back, the destination being Interstate Honda in Ft Collins, CO.

He has one VFR, that being a 2015 (?) DLX. There were 6 miles on the ODO when I began a test ride.

He is not coming down much on price compared to those listings one sees on Cycle Trader, the ones in the $10K range of price. He says those are "bid lot" bikes, units that Honda used for things like promotions, magazine reviews, web reviews, and events. I did not check into it yet but he said all of them are in some special part of the Honda USA warehouse, and that they put lots of them up for bid to dealers. The dealers cannot pick and choose, but must buy the whole lot offered, which may or may not be a truckload quantity. Since they have already been set up and ridden, they are not in crates and therefore do not require dealer assembly.

He said that one of these "bid lot" bikes might have 300 or so miles on it, but is being sold as new. Sounds like buying one of those "factory reconditioned" Dewalt tools from an authorized Dewalt dealer.

A dealer I spoke with in WI up a little north of Milwaukee, who has a DLX for sale on Cycle Trader, says he cannot sell via phone or email to someone out of state, because of his franchise agreement with Honda.

"Bid Lot" bikes, never heard that before. I didn't check everyone (455) but most of the listings on Cycle Trader have dlr contact info in the top right corner of the web page. There is usually a link to the dlr website there as well. So I find it hard to believe there all in some special part of the Honda USA warehouse. Every dlr's situation is different. One may be willing to take a loss on bike thats been sitting in inventory for 2 yrs just to see it go. Knowing they can make it up on something newer like an Africa Twin. Theres many reasons why you see such wide range on prices.

Not willing to sell over the phone violating a franchise agreement may or may not be true. Sounds to me like the dlr doesn't want to take a risk on a potential scam. If its one thing the internet is good for is scams & cheezy porn.

When the economy took a dumper in 08 Honda was stuck with VFR's. You could get a non abs for $7500, abs for $8500. I bought my 07 in 2011 from a small independent dlr. OTD price $7400 for 25th Ann w/ hard bags. Bike had 35 miles on it. Indy dlr claimed they purchased it after Honda dlr liquidated some stock via auction. Keep looking with so many leftovers out there you'll find the right one for the right deal.

I just picked up a 2014 deluxe from Cedarcreek north of Milwaukee a few months ago for the price you listed after assembly. I don't get much room on negation but they do have a rewards program. Action Power Sports in Waukesha seems to still have one was well, they might be $100 cheaper but no rewards program...overall pretty insignificant difference.

I've been to both dealers and they seemed to be similar overall. Cedarcreek was a bit easier of a ride home on the new bike but I'm only 30min away. More dealers around the Milwaukee area seem to have the standard models but not deluxes.

Found a dealer down below Denver center with two (2!) new 2014 DLXs, says 2014 and 2015 identical. Says the VIN# plus dealer documentation only way to tell a '14 from a '15. Gonna ride down tomorrow morning and have a look.

That deal about dealers bidding on truckload lots of bikes or making truckload deals from Honda USA sounds sort of right to me when I recall my conversation with the Cedarcreek guy yesterday. He said he had a whole batch earlier containing DLXs and STDs and had only STDs left, but would probably be bringing in another batch soon.

While most ship in a crate to a dealer (I saw an Africa Twin coming off a truck today in one) some come in crated like in the pic below. A bike like this was probably given by Honda to an editor at Cycle World magazine for a test ride as part of a review piece.

I can certainly imagine Honda doing this in lots of places across the country, and warehousing the returned bikes in a special section of their warehouse. I never inferred that dealers have such warehouses or special places in their own.
