Bad day averted....

I've never seen a valve stem do this. This why you always check your motorcycle tires. Air was low in the front, started airing up and the stem blew apart! This could have turned into a very very bad day!!!

 

Had one go on my Cbr600 half way through Spain. Went on a left hander at a small bump in the road. Only partially went as opposed to blowing out the core completely. Scariest moment of my biking life so far. Was sitting around 90 at the time,then the next second wrestling to keep bike under control.

 

I had the front go flat once due to cracked valve stem. Was maybe doing 50 or 60 mph and air left all at once.
Bike does not steer well with a flat front. /Understatement

For what they cost, I think next tire change, I will also out in new 90 degree stems again. Why tempt fate. Thanks for the post.

 

Has anyone had any balancing differences when switching to a 90 degree stem?

 

Was the valve at an angle? Low tire pressure can cause a rotation of the tire of the rim and tear it,but I have usually seen the on rears with hard acceleration. I wonder if hard braking on the front with a low can do the same thing. Like Norca said, good 90 degree stems are nice. First used them on track bikes, tired of getting burned by rotors when checking hot tire pressures.

 

No the valve stem was straight, the tire had 24 psi in it. All fixed now with a new metal valve stem.

 

Yeah 24 is not all that low. I have spun tires on dirt bikes without rim locks but that was really low psi, like 9lbs.

 

I never have whether I used wheel weights or dynabeads
