My 2003 VFR is making a noise on power. - It is not there when revving the engine in neutral - It is not there when coasting alone off the power at any speed - It is not there in first gear - It is there in 2nd through 6th when on the power and moving, noticeable from about 2800rpm onwards - It sounds like a bearing and gets faster with higher revs I think - Cam chain tensioners were changed with genuine Honda ones very recently I am really struggling to narrow it down with it only doing it when moving. I presume it is not the engine since it doesn't do it stationary. It's not the chain or wheel bearing since it doesn't do it when coasting. Exhaust is fine with no leaks. I can only guess at something in the gearbox, but I really don't fancy aimlessly taking that apart. Any ideas?
It’s possible for a drive(countershaft) sprocket to be worn(“hooked”) in such a manner/degree that applying throttle & accelerating causes this kind of symptom. Almost hard to see unless comparing to a new sprocket, surprising how fussy chain& sprocket dimension really are...
thanks, it's done 12,000 miles since the chain and rear sprocket was changed. I was thinking of changing it. The kit didn't come with a front sprocket so that maybe hooked. The rear one certainly doesn't look like it. The main issue for the bike was the UK lockdown. I put it away in the garage thinking I'd be back on it in a couple of weeks, but it sat there for 18 months and wasn't put away properly, totally my fault. So I am not sure if that has dried the chain out. It was changed 4 years ago. I just thought it odd how it doesn't do it at all in first gear.
At a guess I'd say the chain has developed a tight spot from being stood or it was getting worse and you didn't notice the noise increasing before it was left
it's done 12k, but I do think sitting unused probably has affected it's life. I am going to order a replacement chain with front and rear sprockets. looks like the chain and front sprocket were to blame. Chain is stiff and sprocket is a bit wavey. I am still no wiser to why it didn't make any noise in 1st but did in the other gears. Short test ride seems to suggest it's clear but ill take it for a bit longer of a run tomorrow.
