My gas tank has a couple small dents that with small holes that leak gas. Basically I'm wondering if Bondo will hold up on a repair where it will be in contact with gasoline? I was originally planning to get a new ebay tank, but mine is actually in perfect shape except for the 2 small dents that happen to leak a little gas when the tank is full.
unlikely, bondo always seems to deteriorate for me in gas situations. I would look at JB Weld if these are infact pin holes. According to link-> J-B Weld Company - J-B STIK Product Information and link-> J-B Weld Company - WATER WELD Product Information these look gas safe for total piece of mind, scan ebay from time to time. I was able to score a new old stock tank for my '92 for $50 and plenty of used ones are in that range as well.
Many of the polyester/epoxy products will catalyze in the presence of various liquids. The question would be, how long will they hold up in the presence of gasoline and gasoline that could be as much as 10% ethanol. Unless it's Shell that is "nitrogen enriched" (WhiskyTangoFugg that?) Also ya got improper prep, vibration, vapor pressure fluctuations ect. Weld the holes fix the dings or ride around with a potential Molotov Cocktail between your legs. There's a shrivel/pucker factor for ya.
There are specific products for patching gas tanks. Bondo will not stay on a gas tank when in contact with gasoline. A rusty pin hole on the outside of the tank can be the five times that size on the inside - make sure that your repairs are solid and make the patch go at least an inch around the actual hole.
