Hey guys, I looked around but couldnt find any info offhand so I figured I'd ask Where there any issues with the 2002 800i model year other than the vtec initial RPM and some surging? I'm a daily rider and a wrench, so I put alot of miles and work into my bikes, but I dont want to jump into a used model that might have something only the big red god can take care of for me at big $$$ that might come up only after I've plunked down money... If I could find a good condition '02 vfr800i (non-abs) with some nice aftermarket pipes and hard luggage, under 40k mi, would you say that $5-7k out the door would be a fair price? if yes, do you know anybody getting rid of one? preferably glossy black.
all I could find with a quick search is red ones (and one silver)... I found several 5g VFRs also... http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/mcy/374563704.html http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/mcy/372007410.html http://sandiego.craigslist.org/mcy/371606597.html http://sandiego.craigslist.org/mcy/371074003.html http://sandiego.craigslist.org/mcy/371190134.html http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/mcy/374158505.html http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/mcy/373162134.html http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/mcy/370510245.html http://sacramento.craigslist.org/mcy/374019906.html
When I bought my 02 I did some initial research... There appears to be a common problem with VFRs with more than 15,000 - 20,000 miles melting the main-lead to the 30 amp fuse under the seat.... mine at 6500 miles looks brand new. I keep a watch on it.... I have heard that there was a recall on the swing arm....No Idea how to tell if it's been done already.... To be honest I'm not even really sure on the details about it....I have not really been that concerned about it.... The only reason I am not that concerned about it is that I was told by the previous owner that he bought the bike from a Honda Dealership in 2005.... well after the recall... I think..... The surge issue was very present on my bike.... But I made my bike soooooo much more fun by blocking off tthe PAIR Valve and thus my bike became even "Cooler" than it already was... I still have a 7000 RPM VTECH surge but I can live with it...In fact I rather enjoy it... Perhaps I should elaberate... Riding my bike at anything under 5000 RPM was a futile act of finding good throttle positioning that did not make for a "Herky Jerky" ride... The bike litterally bucked and spit and was kinda unpleasant.... I was about to take it for a tune up but I decided on a wim to try the PAIR Mod... A 29 cent rubber stopper from the local hardware store and suddenly I could rolll the throttle smoothly.... There was much rejoicing!
