Chain and Sprocket Kit

    Guys,

    The chain and sprockets will need replacing on the 8th Gen. I found a kit, but it's a 530 chain rather than the OEM 525 size. Does this make a difference to fit and function? Also, if anybody can give a recommendation on the better chain and sprocket kits on the market, I thank you in advance.

    EK or RK or DID

    530 is fine, X-ring is best.

    If I were replacing chain and both sprockets, I'd go with 520 chain, 530 is heavier and unnecessary. I got mine from
    Sprocket Center.

    Depends on how much you ride - I normally go with a 530 chain, I've found they tend to last a little bit longer than a 520 and its a messy job that I don't like to do very often. If I was riding less than ten thousand miles a year, I would definitely go with the lighter & cheaper 520 chain. I get the VFR 800 2002-2014 kit from sprocketcenter.com - The chain is already cut to length and you can even order the front sprocket with the rubber damper. My preferred chain brand is DID, although I believe RK & EK are similar quality. It is definitely worth upgrading to an X-Ring chain over O-Ring. I replace the chain & sprockets as a set - there is usually some life left in the sprockets, however all three parts will wear out significantly faster if you just replace the chain by itself.

    You could also go 525 chain for a little less weight than the 530.

    How many miles have the sprockets done? Why go to the extra weight and expense of a 530 setup?
    Depending on how many miles the sprockets have done and how well you've maintained chain tension and lubrication, you may not need new sprockets at all! There is absolutely no need to replace sprockets with every chain replacement Provided good chain maintenance has been carried out. For info, the last chain I fitted was a X-Ring D.I.D 525 VX 124 FB (gold coloured) cut back to 110 links. Prior to that was an EK 525ZVX3G124 gold chain, also an excellent chain.
    Agree with Squirrelman - Quality Japanese made chains only

    I've got just over 23000 miles on the chain and sprockets. I was hoping to use the OEM sizes, but aftermarket stuff runs the gamut of 520 through 530. The rear sprocket appears to be in good condition, and I was pretty good with chain maintenance. Looks like I can get a complete kit with the preferred chain options for just under $200.

    avoid aluminum alloy rear sprockets since they wear out twice as fast as steel.

    Guys,
    Thanks for all your suggestions. I decided to keep the stock setup by ordering from Sprocket Center the 525 kit with JT sprockets, rubberized on the front, and a DID chain. Add a PBR Chain breaker and I'm $284 the poorer. :)
