How does this iron but thing work out? Is it done from a certian area, or just any trip you take that goes over a certian amount of miles and they have to trust what you say?

Having done a Saddle Sore 1000, I can tell you it's not easy.

You earn the little certificate they give if you are succesful.

well, if we do Drew's 2010 Kansas run isn't there a way for us to count it? Hell, a lot of us should be able to qualify doing it that way...

An Ironbutt Rally covers a minimum of approximately 9,000 miles in North America over an eleven-day period.

The Saddle Sore Certificate requires that 1,000 miles are ridden within 24 hrs.

This past May me and a buddy completed a saddle sore, 1100 miles in 19 hours - Hingham, MA to Quebec, to Montreal, down through Vermont and back. Left at 4:00 a.m. and pulled back in the driveway at 11:00 p.m.
Canada weather sucked - windy and rainy most of the way.
I've yet to submit to the Iron Butt Association - even kept a log and had it signed at all pit stops.
My buddy rode his Harley Heritage Softtail - with a camera mount on the bars.
I had just out fitted the veefer with a set of Pirelli Diablo Stradas (great tires btw). It was a long, long day. I thank god for the throttle rocker I installed - absolutely saved the day.

My brother and I are heading out to Rapid City, SD towards the end of June for the V-Strom Gathering. It's a little less than 1,700 miles on slab. I'm trying to talk him into going for a Saddle Sore 1000 (24 hrs) and a Bun Burner 1500 (36 hrs) on the way out. That way we'll only use two days going out instead of the four we originally planned. Then we can take the leisurely route home through Canada and make a lot of stops. Not sure we can tough it out for this, but maybe it's worth a shot.

Wont hurt to try for an IB. Just make sure you keep safety #1, quit if you need to. No shame in getting a room for the night if you cant make it. Condition up to it. Its not something you can just hop on and ride.

DNF's (mechanical failures) for each type of bike ? eddie

    Some helpful tips

A few of tips I found extremely helpful:
If you don't have a throttle rocker or cruise control of some kind - get one.
Don't eat a huge meal the night before.
Carry a supply of 5-hour energy shots and energy bars - eat nothing else and drink water sparingly - and do a courtesy squirt at every fuel stop; nothing kills a schedule like having to make unplanned stops for rest room breaks.
You'll be stopping every two hours or so, so plan to eat a bar and wash it down with an energy shot every two stops (every four hours). You'll be AMAZED at how good you feel throughout the entire trip.
Pack extra layers if there's even a remote chance you may encounter cooler temps - same goes for wet weather gear.
Start your log book off at home just before you leave - IBA requires that first sign off from your starting point. Same goes for when you get home - last checkpoint.
Make sure you KNOW your bike is ready for the trip - fresh oil, check/adjust chain, check/pressure tires, coolant, etc.
Bring a camera - you'll definitely want to share and relive the experience.

Otherwise - have a great time Bud.

Here is your forum member VFRChicks response to the Iron Butt Motorcycle rides.

Now she's got me thinking about planning an Iron Butt ride. I think I need a better seat though.

Gonna do the Border to Border IB if there is a SLO 2012. Think I will get a catherter installed so I don't have to stop to pee. Just run it down the leg. Windshield washer fluid for those who tailgate me.

I think I know that guy Dave Donnelly from Parksville BC. Think I may have workked with him years ago in Nanaimo...imagine that. Lot of Californians in that mix. Just goes to show, people from California don't as a rule do anything productive and meaningful.
