    I decided to replace the spring on the shift drum detent wheel to help reduce false neutrals. Tore the assembly apart, found a weak spring as I suspected, and while waiting for the new part decided to pretty everything up. What on earth do you use to remove 16 years of chain lube. I tried brake cleaner, carb cleaner, simple green to no avail. Not sure about dipping these pieces in carb soak due to the black finish on the parts. Referring to the sprocket cover and the shift lever cover, which are both black. Thanks

    Have you try to soak them in Degreaser? I don't remember the brand I bought them at local Stealership and it work like magic. I will post the brand and pictures when I get home.

    Try WD40 as a solvent/cleaner, and then some ProtectAll to clean off the WD40 afterwards.

    Dang, never thought of good old WD, should have bought stock in that company seeing how many half used cans I have around the shop. Old age rearing its ugly short term memory again.

    My long term memory is still good, but my short term memory is awful. So if you want to know what I did yesterday, ask me a year from now...

    Yeah, I have 2 or 3 half-cans myself. I also have several LPS #2 spray lube cans in various states of depletion...

    For some reason, it made me think of something Richard Pryor once said in a skit;

    "Boy, you don't get to be old being no fool. There's a lot of young wise men, but they're deader than a mother f*cker!"

    A flat blade screwdriver.

    No, I'm not kidding. Clean up what's left with carb cleaner.
