Today I'm going to look at an '86 VFR 750. The seller isn't asking for much and says it's an F2. Any common problems I should look out for on this year/model?
    Thanks!

vfrbill, my '86 has had only one serious but fixable problem. The rectifier and if you have a weakening battery the automotive connectors in the rear of the bike get hot enough to melt. Easy to fix though, I hard wired the connectors and got a new battery, with a third Deltran Battery Tender. good luck I love my 1986 RWB, it's very special, You don't see very many of them around.

Thanks for the reply. New questions:
    • Does the rectifier fail and need to be replaced, or does it just cause the overheating of the connectors when the battery is weak?
    • What does "RWB" stand for?
    Thanks!

I have a 1986 VFR750F and have had no problems with it whatsoever. I believe that the FII is the 700cc version. RWB stands for Red / White / Blue, which is the color of the bike. It's a very sharp paint scheme. Good luck.

    It was a wierd deal...

Thanks for the reply, but I won't be buying the bike. The deal was just too wierd. It went like this...

The guy I talked to on the phone was named "Mario". He told me the story of the bike and said he had all the paperwork. We agreed to meet at his house at 9:00 am.

"Mario" said that the ignition was busted as a result of an attempt to steal the bike (while he was in jail). Further, the bike could be started if I would just bring along a battery.

I arrived and found a guy working to hook up a car battery to start the bike for me. I walked up, took a quick look at the bike and introduced myself. We shook hands and the name he gave WASN'T "Mario"!

I questioned him and he said, "Oh, Mario's my brother, but he's back in jail". (I was getting suspicious at this point).

So, I asked to see the paperwork. "It's all right here!", he said with a smile. I looked it over and found that the name didn't belong to either "Mario" or his "brother".

Since I was already there I asked if he could start the bike. As he got it ready I continued to look it over. It had a nice set of Metzlers, a fork brace, and a scraped right engine cover. Then I noticed 86,xxx miles on the odometer. I became a little less interested.

Then he started the bike and the noise from the Kerker exhaust (no baffles) nearly split my eardrum!

At that point I thanked him for his time and said there seemed to be too many things not quite right with the bike. He tried to cajole me by pointing out all the extras (fork brace, factory manual, original exhaust system, etc). I left quickly, telling him that I'd check with some friends.

It might have made a good parts bike, but I was looking for a runner with legitimate paperwork provided by the current legal owner.

Thanks, friends, to those who provided replies to my questions, and to this site for all the info that informed me about this bike. I'll keep looking.

For now I'll have to be content with my other '86... a Yamaha Fazer (FZX 700).

Fazers not a bad ride kind of unique in its own way. Just for your future reference the 86/87' VFR700/750F was available in R/W/B & Pearl white the gauge cluster was round Tach w/ idiot light bar & a seperate round speedo(you never really want to know how fast you going when racing for real, you might lose your nerve. Its was designed for the speedo to be removed for racing appl's) the VFR700/750F2 was available in pearl white & dark blue/gray
& had a futuristic unitized gauge cluster. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong I've stated this in other posts & no has yet so??? based on research & personal exposure/experience.

By the way, sound like you did the right thing walking away from the deal, I've bought "parts" bikes under similar shady deals but never a rider.
