It would seem there is no way to upload a custom route onto an iphone that gives turn by turn directions.

To date all I have seen are apps that permit uploading the route, but then if you drive off course, there is no guidance / correction.

Anyone know of a turn by turn GPS map app that gives turn by turn directions?

The article doesn't mention this feature.

I think you have to try to ask Garmin, or one of the others if this possible. How big a route are you talking about? A 150 to 200 mile trip may exceed memory capabilities of typical iPhone. I know what you would like to do, but that is not how the majority of people use GPS, they want to know how to get from point A to Point B, with real time directions.

Android permits uploading of custom routes from what I've read.
This feature is not so obscure that it's never been done. In fact lots of people build custom routes for their RV, car, motorcycle or bicycle trip.

I'm probably asking on the wrong forum. An adventure touring forum would prob generate more definitive answers.

Link to avrider.com is interesting, but no mention of turn by turn directions to an uploaded route.

Found another site that really gets into it: http://www.bevhoward.com/G2WPT.htm

Whether there is an "app" or the requirement to know some programming remains to be seen. I guess it is going to take someone that knows this stuff to tell you if there is a difference between giving you turn by turn directions as you approach a "waypoint" or whether you have strayed off course (warning or new course correction?) on a given route.

I don't know of any apps that work the way you need. I know masking tape glued to the fairings right below the hand controls works great. Or turn-by-turn handwritten notes on my tank bag as well.

It may not be suitable but google maps wiĺl give you a number of diffeeent routes from point a to point b. It will also navigate and redirect.

I'll have to play with waypoints in combination with "avoid highways" option selected in Google maps in the device.

I think I might be able to create some of it on a computer and then save it to google maps and finally access it on the iPhone.

Or maybe I'll just get a gps next year which permits uploading custom routes and gives turn by turn directions.
