Electrical issues on the road (1991 vfr, 100k,)

Hi, am on a tour round Mexico. Bike began backfiring, lost power and quit. Starter relay was hot, wiggled the wires/fuse, the lights came back on and bike ran well again.......for a day, same thing happened removed wires from relay, cleaned and installed new connectors, indicated lights shone brighter, bike ran well for another day then quit. Got it going again today and noticed rr heated up at idle in about 4 minutes to the point I couldn't touch it for more than a second, checked wires/connections into rr and really and all appear sound. Relay original, rr replaced with oem 10k ago. Any help/thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks
