Hey guys, I am trying to get a 1998 vfr800 running that has been sitting up for about 3 or 4 years. I am having trouble with some of the electrical components. I know that they key was left on the bike a couple of years ago and melted the battery. Anyways, every time I cut the key on, the fuel pump fuse blows. I even went and bought a new pump and plugged it in, but the fuse keeps blowing. Also, the headlights aren't working. And the oil light and fuel injection light on the dash do not come on when I turn the key on. However, the neutral light and the high beam light on the dash do come on. Maybe there is a relay that runs all of that? Just ordered a service manual for it but I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks.

If the battery melted, chances are something else did as well. Starting with the pump, do continuity checks with all the wires to ground. Only one of them should read closed. Ensure battery is disconnected and there is a fuse installed, when doing this test. Once you have found which wire is shorted, pull the fuse to determine which part of the circuit is bad, before or after the fuse. Then check for melted wires or plugs. Fixing this problem may or may not solve the other problems, so I'll wait on the others, but simple wire checks will eventually tell all.
