My trip meter and clock reset themselves during my ride to work this morning on my 98. The bike has 10,200 miles. Should I be worried? I noticed that I didn't hear the fuel pump whine when turned the ignition over this morning either, but I feel like that could've been my imagination.

Is this a sign of impending electrical system doom?

It does sound like an impending R/R failure. To be on the safe side you can get a voltmeter and do some tests. In the service manual it shows you to diagnose charging problems. You can get the service manual at VFRD - vfrdiscussion home (register for a free account) and go to the downloads section.

By the way if the problems the R/R I recommend getting a better wiring harness from Wire My Bike It resolves the fundamental problem with the charging units.

I think first signs are either the battery is not charging and the bike wont start (trips/clock) reset themselves ..or... the charging system fries the battery. Either way .. its R/R time. Grab a new one before bigger damage happens. You might do a search here, there a plenty of R/R threads to peruse.
    Heres one ---- http://vfrworld.com/forums/general-vfr-discussions/15945-best-reg-rec-fix.html

Something else, its not uncommon for the battery to be toast at the same time too, so have it checked while the new R/R is going in.

Something kinda weird is on my '98 the R/R went out almost exactly 10,200 miles too.

    Good luck
