Anyone know where I can get just the seal for the float bowl for an 86 or what is a good gasketmaker that works even though it is in constant contact with fuel?

Tried to start the bike finally and it runs like a champ but leaks fuel like a crazy as soon as the gas has been on for a bit; I pulled the cabs and checked everything but didn't find any issues. They were professionally cleaned 6 months ago and winterized properly so I didn't expect any. Near as I can tell the fuel leaks from between the body and the bowl and the seals look to be original. What is the best way to resolve this issue?

    hey xenocide.
i just purchased a whole carb rebuild kit from some gut on ebay for like $30. it had all the o rings and new choke nuts and most importantly float bowl gaskets. he has 2 sets. one with preformed gaskets, and one with round gaskets that you form when you put them in. i must say his kit is very extensive and he even included a dvd to show you every step in the process of rebuilding your carbs. look under carb rebuild kits on ebay and you should find them.
    good luck.

Thanks. I am going to try it with some Permatex Motoseal for now; I couldn't find any VFR kits on ebay; just kits for VFs but I'll watch if that doesn't work.

It sounds from my research that motoseal might do the trick.

    Here's a tip:

Tip1: Take a piece of string, place in the groove of the float bowl and measure the length. Subtract 1mm and order that size nitrile O-ring. (Personally, I would order 1 size above and 1 size below what I measured)

Tip2: Buy a large O-ring, measure, cut and a drop of superglue to tie the ends together. Presto! Instant custom O-ring.

O-ring installation tip. Use just a tiny dab of heavy grease to keep the o-ring in the groove. I usually place the dab on the straight groove sections of the float cover. This is where the O-ring tends to spring out.

Those are great solutions mason! I had already attempted a fix otherwise I would try the make your own o-ring suggestion! I ended up pulling the o-ring out; soaking it in brake fluid to revive it a bit and then installing it with a thin bead of Permatex Motoseal 1. I filled the carbs with gas via a funnel and let them sit overnight and they haven't leaked yet so I'm hoping it is going to last.

Good choice on the motoseal. That is one of the few sealants that is supposed to be ok for constant fuel contact.

    Hi wildcat49,

AFAIK the float bowl gaskets only come in the carb gasket kits. They are not a specific size since they are a custom fit for that particular float bowl.

    Hope this helps.

Unfortunately those kits are expensive, it's just the way it is. You can probably get a break if you can find some on eBay.

    Viton O-Rings

ON a VFR List I'm on this was just discussed. a 75mm O-Ring fits perfectly. I couldn't find any so I got some SAE -041 O-Rings. According to the fellow listers that have a motor on the bench these fit fine and work well. I have a bunch (32 Viton O-Rings) If you want 4 or 8 send me a PM and I'll mail you some for a few bucks.

Float bowl gaskets are available through "K and L" supply, part # 18-2675....about $9.00 for 4 gaskets.

I wasn't able to find any of the K & L dealers on the 'net that wanted a decent price for the 4 (all were > $25).

I ended up buying o-rings from a guy on ebay. Allen head bolts for all 4 carbs included.

All said and done it's gonna be $13. A bit high considering I just want 4 o-rings, but buy the time I spend 40 minutes getting in and out of NAPA... if they have what I need, I figure it'll be worth it.

I'm mostly disappointed that I wanst able to find the K and L kit on line for < $15.

Anyone happen to know if the float bowl gaskets/o-rings on the 1985 VF500F Interceptor are different from the float bowl gaskets for the VF750F? K&L Supply doesn't sell any for the 500, but they have a listing for the VF750F, according to the guy @ K&L. I've got a 500 and I'm in need of just 4 gaskets/o-rings, instead of a whole kit of schtuff.

I ended up buying a set of o-rings from a guy on ebay that included new float bowl screws. It was economical and worked well. It was a bit of a pain getting round O-ring to fit, but wasn't too bad.

Probably not the answer you were looking for...

The "041" size fits just right. I found some locally at a hydraulic repair shop for about 75 cents apiece.
