From the latest reports, the flu seems to be hitting young adults the hardest. That is unusual because it usually gets the very young and very old. Best defense? WASH YOUR HANDS.

    True story.

Best of luck to your friend, Crusty.

My 16-year old son had it 3 weeks ago. First case of H1N1 at his high school.
103 temp and bad muscle aches and chills.
It took a good 5 days for it to run its course.

    Be well everyone

Sorry to hear that Crusty. I'll definitely keep her in my thoughts.

I don't think there will be enough vaccine to go around, at least that is what I heard. I think this could be tough on college kids especially.

Sorry Crusty, hope she makes it. This is a reminder of how fragile life is.

Don't you hate it when you're right?

    Previous thread:http://vfrworld.com/forums/anything-goes/22577-swine-flu.html

As a physician, when I began reading the above thread posted in 4/09, I eventually added my own thoughts and opinions in which I predicted that the H1N1 virus had the very real potential to become a very bad actor indeed, on the order of a regional or global pandemic. (This doesn't take a genius to figure out.)

I wrote: "Speaking for a moment as a physician, I'm a bit troubled by the apparent lack of understanding among those here who have little if any knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases, virology in particular.

Newly emerging strains of viruses which are highly pathogenic to humans, and which are rapidly genetically mutating (HIV being a case in point) are among the greatest epidemiological threats to humans. But, unlike HIV, which is transmitted only though blood-borne or sexual contact, potentially deadly new strains of this newly mutated influenza virus (i.e., viruses which specifically attack the lungs) are easily transmitted through such casual interpersonal contact such as coughing, sneezing, unwashed hands, touching contaminated doorknobs, etc.

Among those of you who don't have a clue as to the very real potential dangers to children and adults that this newly mutated and drug-resistant influenza virus poses, it's time for you to wake up and smell the coffee. This new virus is real, it's very bad actor, and it is quickly threatening to become a global pandemic. Indeed, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, on a scale of 1 to 6, with 6 being a worldwide pandemic, the outbreak of this particular strain of influenza is currently at level 4..."

But of course, as is unfortunately all too common with a number of VFRW's ultra right-wing conspiracy theorists and know-it-all's (you know who you are), I was subsequently often mocked and derided for my comments and predictions, which were based on sound reasoning and a basic understanding of epidemiology, infectious diseases, and virology.

Take some time to read and review the above thread. Do so, and you will find that lots of clowns were chiming in with uneducated and uninformed statements such as claiming (among other things) that the whole H1N1 'scare' was merely another example of the left-wing media cynically sensationalizing everything and stirring up a public panic in order to (as but once example) increase audiences and advertising revenues...

But now, as these chickens are finally coming home to roost, and the shit from this virus is starting to really hit the fan here in the U.S. and elsewhere... and the real dangers of this virus are now getting your undivided attention because people you know and love are getting sick and dying from this virus... and you are now worried about yourself and your family... what further smug comments would the smart-asses among you care to make at this point?

Do you still choose to glibly shrug off this emerging viral pandemic as yet another left-wing media conspiracy, or does reality now have your full attention? The fact that this virus is so far tending to kill pregnant women and otherwise seemingly healthy young adults (e.g., college students) who are traditionally spared in most other influenza outbreaks... this doesn't bode well.

As a physician, I got my annual flu shot 2 weeks ago, and when the H1N1 vaccine comes out soon, I will be among the first in my hospital to receive it, because like any other frontline healthcare provider my job involves taking care of others, and an already stretched healthcare system can't afford to have large numbers of healthcare workers out sick with the same bug that we're trying to face-off in an emerging viral pandemic.

In my humble opinion, the only conspiracy or collusion we're really facing here is ignorance, be it from the left or the right... And, just as with motorcycling, ignorance and stupidity kills, period.

    little update on my friend....

she has lived a couple more days... is by no means out of the woods but the doctors are more optimistic........ everyday she responds to the antibiotics and improves a little bit.....overall numbers and such..... so that's good news.. she is however not anywhere near the finish line but improving...

Crusty, no matter how bad it gets, where there is life, there is hope and she has my prayers for a full recovery.

RedRover, what was the point to your posting here, "I Told You So"? For that matter, how is anyone, including "VFRW's ultra right-wing conspiracy theorists and know-it-all's" or any "frontline healthcare provider" supposed to get a vaccine that is not available yet, hmm? If this is any indication of your compassion/bedside manner, God help your patients, you pompous ass.

I wonder if there's a vaccine for Arrogant Pompous Ass disease. Perhaps we could ask the genius. :bootyshake:
