    Hi all,
Im changing the oil seals on my 1996 VFR. I've followed the Haynes manual and all is good apart from the point where you separate the fork slider from the stanchion. Two of us have tried to pull them apart but neither fork is parting. Anyone got any ideas?

Also, one of the fork sliders is bent.

Is there a straight swap front end? I was thinking of USD forks but too much messing about.

    Thanks

Have you removed the bolt from the bottom of the stanchion? If you have that out along with the circlip that keeps the fork seal in a few good pulls should do it.

No up side forks needed on this bike. If you got a bent fork tube, the best option is a new one, you can straighten it with M-Stands and a hyraulic press. AnywHoOOoooo---

Regarding the seperation of your fork tube from the stanchion, I assume you took the axle out, under each fork leg is a hole, there resides a (I believe 6 mm - Allen Head bolt, may be a 5?) anyway, take your trusty air impact and zap that sum-of-a-bitch, I had a situation where I had to drill mine out! Anyway, once you get that bolt out of there, its just a question of wango-ing the fork leg down like a slide hammer. It should give up the ghost fairly easily, its also a satisfying job  just dont get that fork oil on you! It smell like whale sperm...dont ask how I know...Gud Luck and Cheers Mate....

Yes, ive taken all the internals from the fork. I think the bushes are worn and are sliding inside each other then sticking.

    Thanks

Yeah, ive taken the allen bolt out. All the internals are neatly layed out on the bench. When I pull the two parts of the fork apart, they jam at their most extended point. I think this is because the bushes are worn and instead of banging together, one os sliding inside the other, jamming them.

Is there another trick to removing the oil seal? Cut it out???

Im going to be buying new fork sliders anyway!!

    Thanks

If you have a heat gun or something similar try heating it up it may be enough to expand the seals to where they will hit each other. Are you sliding them out and hitting them at full extension? Where is the slider bent? I would try heat first though.

Just slide-hammer the two halves apart. Keep whacking until they separate. This can take 10-15 good hits before you drive the seal/bushing out. Even with worn bushings this will work. Give it a few more good whacks and you should have it.

Sweet front end, I'm sure its just the angle of the pic, but the forks look bent. Is that a true straight bolt on replacedment ? no special bearing mix or lock stop modifications, if so then that's a great upgrade to the VFR.

If you have trouble, use some penetrating oil (not WD40) arround the oil seal in the slider. Then put a thick bar through the axle hole in the slider place on some rags, stand on either end of the bar & jerk the upper leg off (you know what I mean).

The bush on the upper can't jam, have you taken the circlip out of the top of the slider ? Remove the dust seal & under neath there is a large wire or flat meatal circlip depending on year. this holds the oil seal in the slider, if its still there then the oil seal can't come out of the top of the slider when forced by the upper leg seal & load spacer ring.

If all else fails & the slider is scrap, then just extend the fork fully & hacksaw off the bottom of the slider about 2" above the axle hole between the caliper mounts, this is the thinest bit ! Then push the upper down through the slider !

I think you will find the 07+ CBR600RR forks are much too short to work. Those forks are some of the shortest out there. There are several other choices that will work, however. Often the RC51 forks are assumed to be the only ones but others are just as long - for example the 2001-gen GSX-R750 Showa and the CBR929/954.

It's a direct swap nothing nothing special needed. EverythiƄg works except there is a tab for the 600rr oem steering stabalizer that needs to be cut off because it hits tank. It's about 2 inches shorter then vfr forks but remember the vfr clip one are mounted above the triples so in reality its maybe a half inch difference at most.

But what happens when you go to mount new clip-ons under the cbr tripple tree? Are you going to have to trim fairing because of a clearance issue?

Are you planning on ditching those fairings? I could use some for my '94 project...
