haynes manual calls this as a fuel cut relay. But honda microfische shows only a starter relay. Well, to be exact, it shows (4) starter relays on the wiring harness. Can anyone tell me if these are the same thing? I didn't really want to remove the front fairing and stuff to find the headlight relay and see if it is the same as the fuel cut relay. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

There are MANY relays on your bike. Some may be the same. The only way to know is to compare them visually, or see if they're the same part number. I guess I'm wondering what you are trying to accomplish?

Sometimes you can swap a "nonessential" relay for troubleshooting, if it's handy. But if you have to tear your bike to pieces to try to find one, it may be easier to bench test it or check signal voltages...jump around it...etc.

    THanks for your imput!

I am going through the fuel pump check. The bikes fuel pump is not coming on. The haynes manual has had me check battery, fuses and the kill switch so far. I got to this fuel cut relay. I found that the first check (continuity) of this part failed. So I was going to order a new one. However, When I try to order it online using a Honda scematic it doesn't call it a fuel cut relay. It calls it a starter relay. So I am asking if anyone has come across this prior. As always, I thank you for any imput.

    Question answered!!

The part called a fuel cut relay for a 98 honda vfr800fi is called a starter relay. The relay will be marked as RC-2208. The honda part no. is:
    SKU: 38501-GN2-014
RELAY, STARTER (MITSUBA) (Honda Code 3030079)

This part is used for many relays on many different bikes. Turn signal relay, headlight relay, FUEL CUT RELAY.

I just needed some sleep before I searched the net for my answer.

Now to hope that that is all that is wrong with the fuel system.
Thank you all for your imput. Rob :ncb:

It takes more than a resistance test to pass/fail this part...and there's more to it than just that. There's also a stop relay and bank angle sensor in that circuit that could have failed.

The cut relay doesn't allow your pump to run if you lose spark. So first off, check to see if you have spark. If you do, unplug the four pin connector that goes to the cut relay and check for positive battery voltage on the two black/white terminals in the connector (key on), use a good ground for the negative probe. If you don't have it...the problem precedes this part of the circuit. If you do, short one of the black/white wires with the Brown (NOT the brown/black!!), a paper clip works nicely. If your pump then runs, the cut relay could be bad, or you have an open circuit between the brown/black wire and the ECM, or your ECM has failed.

If your pump still doesn't run, you could have a bad fuel pump, or the brown wire between the cut relay connector and the pump is open. Hope this makes sense to you.
