Fuel Level Sensor FAIL/FIRE

    Durring presason maitenence I'm about to address a problem that I bypassed last summer.
    The fuel level sensor wires MELTED DOWN on her Gen 3 and left the bike w/o a fuel gauge.
    I have yet to test resistance on the sensor or attemt to change the wires. I'm looking for options.
    My quesstions:
    Is the gen 3 & 4 unit the same part?
    Is this failure caused my the sensor or do I have a bigger problem?
    Is it better just to "let it go" & run w/o the gas gauge?
