New to the site. I have an 86 VFR700F . When I add power to the fuel pump the pump opens but does not pump. Is this normal, does it need to be pressurized or is there some sort of relay that controls the pump. If I turn the key on and off the pump pushs fuel. Thanks

pump should run for a short time when you turn the key on. it then shuts off till you crank the engine. it only runs when the engine is running. there is a fuel cutoff relay. in case the bike crashes and you can't reach the key or the kill switch cause you arms are jammed up you arse and broken or maybe you are dead layin in the road too far from your bike to reach it. you can't walk over there cuz your legs are broken. or maybe you don['t have the energy to walk over to it cuz your blood is leakin all over the ground from where your leg used to be attached.
Sorry if this offends anyones sensibilities. it is not personal, it is just business
    maybe i should stop drinking?
I am just making a morbid joke!!!

    Hi JBD and [IMG]

When putting the key to run before starting yes the fuel pump normally runs for a second or two. Cars do this too.

What do you mean by add power to the fuel pump and it clicks open?

edit my bad i saw fuel pump and just assumed fuel injection without looking at bike year.

you can check your pump action and relay operation best by TEMPORARILY ( due to Danimal's very DIRE but VALID safety warnings explained above) using a jumper wire across the black and black/blue wires going to the fuel pump relay.

For the last 15 years i've using a paperclip wire suitably wraped in electrical tape. I shouldn't be risking it because one day a bike i was test riding burst into flames right under my a** !! But it was only an eary 80's Virago with a bad starter, so no great loss!

(short rant : I'll never buy that damn relay or another voltage regulator from Honda again!!)

pump will run continuously (with key on) but stops clicking when proper fuel pressure is reached if its reached or when it burns up and quits.

So if I add power and the pump only clicks once, the plunger goes up and then will not go down until I remove power does that mean my pump is bad, or the relay.

The pump will only pump until the pressure reaches about 3 psi. The pump cannot overcome that pressure and stops. As the carbs use the fuel, the pressure drops and the pump starts pumping again.

Remove the line from the carbs and put into a gas container. Short the relay and you should see gas flow out of the line. The "Fuel Pump Flow Test" should be outlined in the manual.
