After sitting in my garage for about 3 months I went to start my bike yesterday and found it very uncooperative in it, just turning over until the battery didn't want to try to start it anymore. After checking a few things I noticed the fuel pump wasn't pumping gas while I was trying to start the bike, instead only putting out a little squirt when I let off the starter button. Now I didn't think of holding the throttle while trying to start it and I don't know if the fuel pump is only used during acceleration and the vacuum from the carb pulls fuel the rest of the time, so there is my question, should my fuel pump be pumping while the bike is trying to start or is my problem somewhere else?
The fuel pump relay is triggered off the pick up coil for the ignition timing and only fires the pump once per revolution. If you need to prime the system unplug the pump and jump it to the battery until it loads up and stops pumping and them try to start it.The green wire at the pump is the ground wire.
So I should see it pumping fuel what I'm trying to turn it over to start it then? EDIT: Awesome, primed it like you said and she started right up. Thanks man!
If your ignition system is producing spark...yes. Normal would be the fuel line kinda pulses fuel. If you lose spark, the fuel cut relay won't allow any voltage to the pump. If your carbs are full of gas, as they normally are when you shut the bike off, you shouldn't really need the pump to start the bike. However, if no fuel is added by the pump to replenish, you won't go very far.
