Hey guys, I've been looking around for a good first bike for a while now, and the VF500 sounds like a great bike. Good handling, plenty of power, and light weight.

I found a VF500 at a dealer near me for $2250. It has 28,000 miles on it but it look pretty clean. The price, however, seems to be way too high. Nadaguide for an excellent condition 86 is 1600 and KBB is 1300. Is the dealer gouging or are the guides too low?
I'll be going to take a look at the bike tomorrow or the day after and I'd like to know what a decent price would be.

How long do these engines usually last? 28,000 miles seems like a lot.

Would this bike be a good commuter?

Heres the link to the ad with some pics.

    Thanks

For about the same price you could get a newer Honda like an '86/'87 VFR with comparable mileage, a better bike unless you're a new rider......

A newer bike is usually a better bike if maintained well.

But the VF is a fun bike with one of the smooooooothest engines ever!

That seems really cheap compared to the 500 on Craigslist in the Portland, OR area. The guy is asking 3,000 for it!!!!

I bought a 87 700 for 1600 a month or so ago, my first street bike. I was also wanting a 500, but they don't come up often so thats why I chose the 700. I've ridden dirt bikes in my early teens off and on, so I felt ok with the basic skills of riding which partially persuaded me the 700 would work fine. As long as you are not the kind of person who panics and pulls the throttle instead of the brake, you might be okay with a 700. I would have to say that most people should start out with the 500 range bikes though!

I would think with a name like Honda it will still go for a while, as long as it was maintained good, if the dealer is selling it its probably a good one.

I sold the one I bought a couple years back for about $450 so I think the dealer is doing more than gouging. If that was a superclean bike that JamieDaugherty had fixed up real nice then maybe, but even then, if you are looking at a first bike, look cheaper so it doesn't hurt so much when you drop it. My son found his ex500 for $800. I got my wifes EX250 for less than $1000. The deals are around so don't fall in love with it just cause they are great little bikes. Another one will show up. I looked at your pics and it looks to be a really nice one so I'd go as high as $1500 and I think the bike would last you quite a few miles and be a fun ride. You are likely to drop your first bike a couple times, though so if you can get a bike cheaper and get some good riding gear I think you'll be much better served.

Yea, I've already got most of the gear I need, I just need boots and some overpants, which I should be ordering pretty soon. I'll try to knock the price down around 1500 and see what they say.

    Thanks

I only paid 900 for my 500 in SUPERB shape. 14k miles on the odometer when I bought, never been down, perfect shape (Until I got to it). Though, I did get under weird circumstances, so my situation wasn't typical.

Oh and, the 500 isn't 'light.' It's skinny and narrow, but definitely not light by today's standards.

The 500's seem to have come up a little in value over the past year or two. A nice shape bike used to go for about $800, now that same bike is $1000-1200. As previously mentioned, $2250 is pretty high especially for a bike with that many miles on it. If it's in exceptional condition it might be worth $1500.

The most I've ever paid for a VF500F is $150, for whatever it's worth.
