Hello all, I live in wisconsin and its very cold. Been minus 20 last two nights. The colder it gets, the more I think about riding. Wow, I just my new bell star helmet, props to the ups people, they really work there tail off this time of year. Anyway, my name is Dale, I am thirty seven years old, and I am a christian. I've been riding motocross bikes since I was 5 years old. Mostly a woods rider here in wisconsin and the brutal trails of the UP of Michigan. I saw my very first VFR back in the late eightees in one of my motorcycle magazines, I think. It was a single sides swingarm model and I told myself that someday I would have one. And now I do. Also a fan of the old two stroke triples, have had some of them. I found a 98 down in Illinois this fall for 3500, and only 6100 miles on it. Pristine condition with smoke shield, staintune high mount, sargeant seat, and Y2K mirrors. All the same things I would of done if I had bought it new. Everything else untouched, including the 12 year old tires, which I have concerns over, but more about that later. I love it, I got to put some miles on it before winter, and its everything I hoped it would be and more. I had it apart already before I snapped some photos, so I apologize for that, but I will be doing things to it that I will post through out the winter. I am pleased to be part of this amazing and informative web site, and hope to hear from all of you. ride on.

Nice choice in rides, I've always liked the old kawa triples. Being only 21 and still in college I have plenty of bikes to look forward to. As for the tires, I seriously recommend changing them before you take her out in the spring. I picked up my 99 in august with tires that were probably 4-5 years old and they were very dry and lacked grip. I highly recommend the dunlop sportmax roadsmart tires. They are a sport touring tire with a dual compound rear tire to resist squaring off when spending some time on the highway. I've put 3400 sport touring/ commuting/ mountain scratching miles on mine and I absolutely love the bike and the tires. They are just over half tread depth with good wear characteristics as long as I keep after the tire pressure to keep it at what honda recommends. Good luck with the bike, keep it rubber side down.

Welcome to the site. Sux to live where you do. I went out for a ride today and I live north of you, You may find this group shares a lot in common with yourself. But we want to see you here as well. Post up some pix soon. Do you need special permits to run your bike with a snow blower on the front there?

Welcome! So, with all the work you'll be doing on the bike in sub-degree temps, how do you heat your garage?

Thank you for the advice. I've always ran dunlops on all my motocross bikes because they have never let me down or did anything odd like break knobs. So I will stick with dunlop, but will take suggestions on other dunlop tires to replace these, although they look good with alot of wear left, I dont trust them. And congrats for being in college, take it as far as you can, for as long as you can, its brutal out here.

And thanks to all that have welcomed me, I look forward to talking to all of you in the future. I'd like to ask Randy how can he be riding in these temps, or if he is putting me on? I have a plow truck the handle plow duties, but that did get me thinking, a VFR with a sidemount snowblower run off the cam gear, with chains on the rear tire, what do you think? I am also interested in VFR riders for christ. And yes, it takes an angry woman to heat a garage, I prefer oak.

IMO, Jesus would tell you to get new rubber. He could resurrect. You can't.

Randy, your temps aren't minus 20F. People don't even ride snowmobile in -20F. That's ice fishing weather, in a house, with a heater, cards, and lots of beer.

Welcome to the forum. I grew up in MN and lived in WI for some time. Still have property in the Rice Lake area.

    Billy,

I know I have a bit of a rep of having a loose screw when it comes to riding in cold and foul weather but I bow to the floor and kiss the toes of that guy. Was that a burn out, or an iceout he did?

And Tink. I'm from Winnipeg. -20F. is definitely cold, but I have routinely been in colder but not on a bike. Worked delivering beer on Portage and Main in the Peg in that shit. My brother has an Ice Fishing shack he leaves on the Red most the winter long.

    I miss ice fishing.

It's not the same in Colorado like it was back in MN and WI

Thanks, I have spent some time there also, the woman's famliy lives up there in clayton Wi. The majority of them from outside of minneapolis. After being in the army and living in warm climates, I can barely stand the cold anymore, but I deal with it. Now Colorado has been an interest for me to go and live for some time, maybe someday. And thats true about snowmobilers, they do not even ride when its that cold, maybe randy is made out of ice. hehe
