For those interested in having a heads up display …. THis is very cool. A small company -nuviz- is seeking funding via kickstarter . The funding window closes in 10 days. Hopefully they get what they need. A product is supposed to be out late next year.

My 48-year old eyes won't read the small font on my GPS. So a handlebar mount system would not work. I HUD would work great.

I'm not affiliated in any way with nuviz. This is not a professional endorsement. But it is a personal endorsement -- I'd love a HUD.

Sounds like a great project, I made a small pledge, worth reading the FAQ's on the kickstarter link, much more informative and impressive than their web site.

I have the same problem with my 69 year old eyes! Read the FAQ about prescription lenses.

Which one might have Oprah re-runs? I wonder if this sort of device will show an elk crossing the road in the next blind corner or pick up the homing signals from WalMart.

Nothing like a new farkle to occupy one's time whilst in motion on a bike.

I'm waiting for the model that allows porn streaming on the helmet display.

    From NUVIZ:

Of course we are aware of previous and ongoing attempts of bringing a display to the motorcycle helmet. (As rider’s we’ve even tried to back them!) But by definition, a HUD is a transparent display that presents data to the user. This has not been done before, hence our claim, but with your help, we will be the first generally available HUD for motorcycle helmets on the market.

    On the display:

This is an excellent question. Reading glasses are not required to see the image. The focal length of the virtual image is set at the usual distance your eyes are focused at while riding. Your eyes do not need to accommodate to the physical distance of the HUD. Other prescription glasses should not cause any problems viewing the information on the display either.

The British system uses a small conventional display, which your eyes have to focus on, not a true HUD. NUVIZ (parent company) has the extensive experience in designing systems for the military.

I did the small donation, but I was very tempted to pony up for the early-bird. I may even go back. I'd just wear my helmet and walk around pretending to be robocop.

Very cool idea. Having a small display with changing readings in the lower corner of the display might prove a little distracting, I think you would be able to get used to it quite quickly. Having to look just to the side of your helmet for info like route maps would certainly be far less distracting than looking down at the display on your GPS or other device on your the triple clamps or the top of your tank bag.

Great idea. I hope one day the unit be small enough to be built in the the helmet & use a small portion of helmet visor to display the info.

God help us if Oprah starts doing porn inside our helmets.

This is the first generation.. Exciting stuff for sure... But I want to see the second or third generation where the siez of everything is more slimmed down .
Its still way too big right now... can you imagine accidentally knocking that off? There goes 500...
And with my helmet... It's a Nolan, I think the design is a little too sharp for this thing to properly mount.

That's OK to wait, but make a small donation to KickStart so there will be a 2nd & 3rd generation! You can pledge what ever you feel like, if they don't make it to 100%, you don't pay, but if they do, you are charged and you get whatever gift goes with pledge.

Again, this is a true heads up display, military style, not a small LCD screen up close like the British system.

I would love to get the hardware end of this and just port the screen from my GPS or phone. And am I the only one worried that it's on the right side of your face? I don't know what adjustments/selections can be made while riding, but I like my throttle/brake hand to stay planted.

Well, I keep getting updates that the project is happening. I didn't donate much but I'm happy to contribute to someone trying to make something new. I might even bit one after the first batch comes out.

I hope they make one with night vision and 3D with a little satellite that is either helmet mounted or on a little trailer that can be towed behind a bike. With some minor changes in electronics for those who have videocams installed in their homes, they could see the old lady making it with a harleydood with a shaved head, lots of tats and crotchless chaps. All this and Walmart ads too.

The Nuviz will be available this summer, for any full face helmet, less than $500.
