    The Good:

A kid in my neighborhood some how got his hands on a 1990 VFR that has about 15k on the clock.

    The BAD:

It was dropped something fierce and it needs a front cowl, both side fairings, a instrument cluster, front blinkers, front mirrors and who knows what else. My question is what would you pay for it? The tank and rear tail is fine and it start right up. There doesn't seem to be any frame damage and when I rode it (albeit a very short ride) the forks seems OK. What do you think I should offer for it, I was thinking about $500 and then investing about $1500-2000 to make it close to new again. This is a 3rd Gen bike, right?

Without pic's $500 sounds fair. It is gen 3 and parts no longer grow on trees so be ready to hunt around a bit for what you need but well worth it as they are great bikes.

$500 would probably be pretty safe. At that price you could probably part it out if you had to and recoup your money. If it's as trashed as you say and you aren't able to do cosmetic repairs on your own; I'd guess you will spend a grand easily to get replacement parts. Considering a good condition Gen 3 sells for $2200-$2600 or so, you'll be in the neighborhood of breaking even before your done.

it may help your case if you did some shopping on ebay 1st and printed out some prices on the most expensive parts for that thing you can find. Show the guy you've done some research and the most you can pay is $500 because this part costs X and that part costs XX etc... Then when the bike is all fixed up it's still only worth XYZ...

If you're a good negotiator and get him to cough up a number 1st, maybe you can even get it for less than $500.

If you save your nickels you can put the really trick 3rd gen bodywork from Thurn Motorsports out of Germany on the 3rd gen. Probably cost 1000 bucks total but man it would look good.

If Dino drops a grand on plastics, he's going to need to rent out part of his new home to help pay for it!.

Good luck brotha! Keep us posted on how it goes. I'll take a rid down and check that bitch out when you got her in your garage.
