This isn't something I'm worried about but I can't help noticing that my 8th Gen is idling just shy of 2000 rpm. She's only done 5000 km and has done this from new, so I'm just a little curious as to whether it's been set up to run this way for a reason in the factory. Handbook says the idling speed should be 1200 rpm and is not adjustable.

    Anyone else noticing this ?

Many others have reported this as well.

Lugging a new (or cold) engine is catastrophic on the crank and rod bearings. And think that many novices buy bikes and there is a lot of stalling out there at stoplights. A high idle will prevent some of the resulting damage. I would leave the idle high for a bit and lower it perhaps at the first service.

Read up on this site about some of the blown 1200 engines where Honda has advised the owner that they were running at too low of an rpm. At 15,000 miles the crank shatters. Never heard of that happening to an 800, but the point is correct.

My 9 day old bike does it as well, will get it adjusted at the 600 mile service.

Thanks guys, thought it must be something like that, mine is 4000 km past the first service but I'll mention it to them when it goes in at 10k.

Mines at a little over 2000km and I find the idle shifts anywhere from 1500 to 2000rpm when cold
It was higher but I adjusted it down to 1200 after running it for an afternoon, knob was under the left fairing from memory

Aha, the cunning buggers ! The manual says it's non-adjustable so I thought they must have to do it in the engine management system. You would think something as fundamental as that would be in the manual.

Yeah I was surprised nothing was listed in the owners manual. I got the service manual and they tell you take the left fairing off, I spent the time doing that just to realise its visible when its on and there's no need to remove anything. Its a Phillip heads screw with a black plastic knob around it

image.jpg Here's a pic of the idle knob
Turn it left to lower idle rpm ( or anti clockwise). Sorry pic appeared sideways.

Many thanks for that thecat, I was looking at the top of the fairing, duh!
    Now idling at 1300.

Another cold day for a ride to the seaside.
