Hi I am looking for any advice on refurbishing My front forks I.e Air Gap ,Oil Weights ,spring wear limits ANd General Setup Etc Thanks' In Advance
If you are going down this path then I can heartily recommend at the very least replacing the springs with something specific to your weight, and if you have the appetite for it, replacing the compression and rebound valves as well. I have installed Racetech Gold Valves plus springs in all of my older bikes and always been very pleased with the results. I am around 85 kg and would normally use something like 0.9 kg/mm springs with 15mm of preload, and an air gap of 120mm. You will end up with a front end that is more comfortable, handles bumps and dips in bends without jolting off line and reduces tyre wear. If you don't want to do any of the above then at the very least replace the upper and lower bushings, fully diassemble and clean all the parts and especially flush the damper cartridges with kerosene to get all of the accumulated gunge out. Then reassemble with new oil seals in accordance with the service manual. Ideally you will want to adjust the spring preload so that the fork is using about 35mm travel when you are seated. You can improve bottoming resistance by incrementally increasing the oil height if you need to (assuming you kept the stock weedy springs); a smaller air gap = greater pressure rise when compressed = more bottoming resistance.
