So this was on the STG facebook page and gotta say, WOW!
VERY Lucky! When I first watched this, I thought for sure the "crash" was going to be with the SUV. Talk about timing, the truck in the right hand lane just blocks the camera's view as the rider approaches the SUV, then after it passes, you see him hit the embankment on what appears to be the same trajectory, so he must have missed the SUV by millimeters!
Biker is in view as he/she passes the SUV....for maybe 1 frame you see the biker behind the white oncoming SUV before everything is blocked by the dually. Looks to me like the rear wheel is locked up as you can see the back end on the bike slide left first and then to the right as the bike passes the oncoming SUV! Countersteer or maybe just luck? Can someone slow it down to frame by frame for us? Rider looks hurt but alive thank goodness! Head on with the SUV would most likely have been game over I would guess. This reminds me of the video of the English guy who ran right into an oncoming car making a turn in front of him. He wasn't able to avoid a direct collision unfortunately. Looks to me like avoiding the other vehicle at all cost is the best bet, even if it means tumbling down the road or into a cow pasture....anything is better then a direct hit! My uncle tells the story of his wreck yrs ago, says someone pulled out right in front of him and he jumped straight up off the bike, flew over the car and went tumbling down the road. If I remember correctly he says he didn't even try to brake, just jumped straight up like an armadillo! Don't know for sure if he is exaggerating but that's how he tells it. Next time I see him I'll have to ask him about it again.
Considering the height he was somewhat lucky in that he landed relatively flatly on a rise in an empty paddock, could have easily been into tree or over a drop.
I just saw an interview with the rider with the camera. The rider that crashed was a guy (his best friend) and ended up with a "minor" broken back. He was back on another bike within a couple weeks. Camera rider didn't really say what actually happened, but it looks to me like he was attempting a second pass on the vehicle in front of the truck (on that double yellow right hander) and realized way too late that there was an SUV coming the other way. I think he intentionally veered left (actually standing the bike up to end the right turn and go straight) to avoid the head-on and thus launching himself into orbit. It was on that video clip show called Right This Minute.
Thats Funny BB! The guys got mad skills, thats big air time. He should ride with a Tempur-Pedic strapped to his back.
