    Hey guys,
I was working on my VFR800 today, and when the first gear was engaged, crackling noises started to occur when I released the clutch to start moving. The weird thing is, that when the bike is in neutral and I engage and disengage the clutch, no noises occur. I don't know if those noises are normal, or if its going out. Please let me know what you guys think.

    Thanks!

Noises like that are never good but here is what I'm thinking.........I think you are hearing the flapper valve on the airbox. They have been known to do this so most of us do the flapper valve mod and the problem goes bybye

Ok, I checked the clutch fluid and it really needs to be changed, it's dark brown. When I change it and if that doesn't fix the problem, how do you go about doing the flapper valve mod? Also, do you know the recommended amount of oil a 2001 vfr800 should take?

Whenever I change the oil on my 2000 VFR800 I always pour some new oil in the filter before spinning it on and then fill the crankcase. Owners manual calls for 3.1L but I always use about 3.5L including filling the new filter with fresh oil.

Welcome to the forum by the way and if you haven't done so already, be sure to post up some pics of your bike. Have fun, ride safe, and don't forget to keep her shiny side up.

Take you seat off and remove the two bolts at the front of the fuel tank. The tank has a hinge at the rear so you can just lift the front to expose the airbox. Once the tank is pulled back you will see the airbox and a vacuum line across the top of it to a pneumatic actuator. This is the flapper actuator. Disconnect it and cap the line. Voila, no more flappetty flappety noise which is kinda crackley as well.
