I'm starting to get false nuetrals

    I think I know what you mean - but before we head off in the wrong direction can you clarify exactly what you consider to be a false neutral?

    Inherently I would use that phrase if the neutral light came on but the bike was actually in gear and typically this is caused by dodgy wiring. If the bike has been slid down the road, or possibly just dropped on its side, its possible for insulation on wiring to get snagged - perhaps not enough to completely disable the bike - but perhaps enough to allow exposed wires to short intermittently to the frame or an adjacent circuit and illuminate the neutral light.

    If you mean that when you go to change gear you find it somehow ends up in neutral with no drive - then its a whole different ball game and probably rather expensive.

    If your getting the false nuetral between first and second, you have to be more aggressive with your boot! Did you recently change your foot ware? Some times small things make a difference, I have a factory pro shift kit on one bike, and not on the other. I was riding the one with the shift kit and noticed a difference getting into neutral from the move, meaning down shifting 6,5,4,3,2, - snick it into neutral and roll up on the lights, bear in mind I have only owned this bike for 20 years and 80,000 miles (sarcasm.) I commute with the other bike about 150 miles a week, its a buttery smooth shifting bastard I tell you, both bike ride/shift great. I would not pop for a shift kit on my 93 bike or my other bike (Kawasaki.)

    I used to get a false neutral going into sixth gear when I was not carrying enough speed, that has'nt happened in years though. I shift into sixth gear at 80+mph and its slick as chit. Sixth is an over drive imho on the gen3 bikes I own. I put 4000 miles on my 93 since I got it and have not had one false nuetral.

    Could be time for an oil change maybe, you notice a difference when you change your oil too. Cheers

    I'll probably do an oil change soon. It's the same oil as I ran on the track, so eighty miles or so at WOT or nearly so. It's Rotella T6, so it may just be worn out. Not that many miles, but, who knows.

    This could just be a worn spring in the shift mechanism allowing the shift drum to halt between gears. I fitted a Factory Pro shift star kit to my 5th gen and it turned a baggy Honda trans into a Suzuki-like snickety slick gearbox.

    I got one shift kit in one viffer and one don't have one, the difference I really notice riding both bikes back to back is "getting into nuetral" from a roll coming up on a light. More boot force is required for the one with the shift kit. The kit was installed over 20 years ago and I remember having a spring loaded pall giving me chit. This bike at least the gen3 bike was a bit of a pita to do. The other bike that doesn't have one rides/shifts really nice ditto for my EX500. Its the detent arm that your paying for, its a ball-bearing set-up, along with a stiffer spring/gasket. Cheers and happy safe riding.
